View Full Version : bastard Harddrive crashed on me! need some suggestions please

how do I get this POS to work again or recover my data? I hooked it up to another pc but it is unable to detect the drive, states "Not Accessible". Which 3rd party software out there is good to recover my info, or should I have a pro do it? I have too much invoices for clients that HAS to be recovered. :mad:

Help ... :confused:

Good luck bro. Most hard drive recovery places are $. If the drive won't even detect in the BIOS I don't think any of the software hard drive recovery utilities will work. If you have another drive exactly like it you can switch out the controllers (the board on the bottom) and see if that will work. Good luck.

HDD is detected in the BIOS but upon bootup it just sits at a black screen with a blinking cursor. I tried to do a restore but it failed. Hmmm I don't want to f-up this HDD its a 80gig. If I switch out the controllers, would there be too many parts to put back together or is it just one piece.

It's usually just one piece. It's the board on the bottom, basically it's what controls the hard drive and interfaces with the computer. If the drive is detected in the BIOS, slap it into the system as a slave, boot off another drive and run something like Norton Utilities. If it's recoverable it will tell you... I haven't used any hard drive recovery apps since about '99 or '00 so I'm not sure what some good ones are... but we used to use Norton Utilities and if that didn't work and the data needed to be recoverd we would send the drives to OnTrack (http://www.ontrack.com/) and they would recover the data and send it back to you on cd's or a dvd's.

thanks for the suggestions. :) I have tried booting it as the slave with another HDD as the master but it states that it is "Not Accessible" in My Computer. Yet it still finds the drive in the BIOS. I tried to use windows explorer to see if it detects any data there but the same issue. I will troubleshoot somemore tonight, when I get home.

Last year we implemented a company wide "recovery solution" that backs up all the hard drives to a our SAN so we haven't had to send any drives for recovery in quite a while, now all we do is slap a new one in and boot off a CD and in a couple of hours they'll be back to exactly where they were the night before.

image/bit level restores are not cheap but effective. I'm looking at a product now that will run about 1k per server plus the disk space on the SAN to store the data.

The cost to protect the data usually out weighs the cost/damages of a loss. I'd look into mirroring the drives or a good backup solution at least.
