North Texas running off 7 wins in conference play this year with losses to Baylor, FAU, Colorado, and Texas or???
#25 Bowling Green. They are 6-1 in the MAC (with one game to play) and 8-2 overall. Non-conference wins over Temple (rated below every Sun Belt team except USU and Idaho) and I-AA SE Missouri. Of the six conference wins, five were over schools rated below Idaho, the lowest rated Sun Belt team.
Northern Illinois won one non-conference game (over I-AA Southern Illinois that would have gone to OT if SIU kicks the PAT rather than going for 2 and the win). They had FIVE conference wins over MAC schools that finished below Idaho.
Toledo is bowl eligible thanks to a non-conference win over Temple and five conference wins over schools rated below Idaho.
Miami of Ohio won the MAC East with one non-conference win (over a I-AA) and four of seven league wins were over teams rated below Idaho.
Marshall became bowl eligible on Saturday. They went 6-2 in league play defeating four teams in conference rated lower than Idaho, the Sun Belt's worst team.
Akron finished bowl eligible at 6-5 going 6-2 in league play beating four teams in conference rated lower than Idaho.
No MAC school that is bowl eligible defeated a team rated higher than Baylor, the weakest team on UNT's non-conference slate.
Of the six MAC schools to get bowl eligible, 2 made it without winning a non-conference game.
By contrast look at Troy at 6-5, 5-2 in the Sun Belt. Their win over Missouri clearly better than any non-conference win by the MAC bowl eligible teams but even more interesting. Troy's strength of schedule in Sagarin is 81 better than the toughest schedule in the MAC (Marshall at 100 followed by UCF at 102 and they've yet to win a game at 0-10).
The Cajuns and Blue Raiders are the only Sun Belt schools with SOS that isn't higher than EVERY MAC team and they beat 11 of the 14.
The Sun Belt SUCKS????
Want the Belt to have a reputation like the MAC? Then we need more teams and more that suck so the better teams can post good looking records that don't stand up on examination.
