of the game, about 45 seconds left, ron artest fouls ben wallace, so ben and him get into it. refs get in the middle, break it up, etc. ron artest is laying on the scorers table and a cup of beer comes flying in and hits him right on the chin. he charges into the crowd and starts to beat the guy that did it. all hell ensues. both teams into the crowd, fans punching players, players punching fans. it was NUTS ! refs called the game at that point. pacers won.

i do not want to see suspensions. it was being handled fine until the cup of beer came flying in. the nba needs to step up its security measures. that shit could have gotten a lot nastier. i think artest needed better self restraint, but what would you do if i threw a cup of beer and it hit you in the chin ? you would want to punch me in the face.

At a public sporting event, you shouldnt have to fear for your safety.
I am wondering about the people that had little kids there, i bet they ran out as soon as they could.
Im sure that was great for the children to see.

The ones that participated in the fight should be fined heavily and banned for the season, i understand that you would get pissed if someone threw something at you, but you have to control yourself when you are a paid athelete, or you get fined, plain and simple.

My wife and I were watching ESPN like it was the Zapruder film. From what I saw...
1. Artest probably went after the wrong person. The guy he went after was pretty far away and still had a big plastic cup of drink in his hand. Fan #1 will get paid bigtime! Especially, if they can prove he didn't throw anything. I think Artest went after him because he was the smallest guy. He sure didn't want any piece of Wallace.

2. After that, another Fan #2 doused Artest and Jackson hit him. He will get paid because he wasn't threatening Artest or Jackson. Jackson had the crazy eye on the court and wanted to hit someone.

3. Fan #3 came onto the court into a fighting stance but did not have his hands up to fight, Artest swung at him. The fan shouldn't have bowed up. He may not get paid.

4. Fan #4 came to Fan #3s rescue. And pushed Artest off of him. A big guy in a suit clocks him in the back of the head. After they are seperated, chump O'Neal comes in and sucker punches Fan #4 from the side. Fan #4 will get paid bigtime!

Overall, basketball players suck at fighting.

obviously you have a personal issue to work out with the punk thug. im not a fan of him nor the pacers, and i agree it was a cheap shot on his part. im sure he would have gotten a flagrant foul, but i know wallace needed to get ejected, not cause his initially hit/push but b/c he wouldnt back off.

How can you say the players are solely to blame? The fan threw beer on artest. The cheap shot he made the play before is totally irrelevant. That fan knew he was throwing it on a hot head, what do you think he was thinking would happen? I understand you want artest banned for life, I don't like him either, but it's not like he went and started swinging at random fans. He went after the guy who threw the beer. And no, I didn't laugh my ass off at the whole fight. I laughed my ass off at the fan who deserved it, the one who walked on the court acting like he was gonna do somethin. Once you walk on the court, you step out of the realm of fan and into the realm of trespasser. What about the fans who were throwing everything on the players as they were walking out? and that big black guy swingin at jones, and the dude in the white had tryin to hit artest. Hell the damn chair that was thrown. None of these people were involved to begin with besides artest and beerman. It escalated when fan #2 threw his beer on artest also. Granted maybe artest shouldn't have headed into the stands, he is to blame for that. But the fans are to blame for it going further than artest and beerfag. Solely the fans. Because everything else after that the players were in self defense.

BUT, every fan I saw that got the crap beaten out of them either threw beer or cheap shots at the players... throwing beer or a beer cup at someones face is assault! I don't think those fans will get any money out of it.. they may sue and it may cost the players some big lawyer fees but I don't think anyone is going to award someone who assaulted a person first. Any fan that does something like that deserves to get the crap beaten out of them.. they weren't just talking trash like they Texas Rangers incident a while back, they were throwing crap at the guys face! If all of these people get paid for this I can't even imagine what that will do for professional sports... go to a game and throw something at a multi million dollar player and get a bunch of money.

And Artest has an album due to be released on Tuesday. I wonder how many people will boycott because of the melee?

I know what Artest did was wrong, but maybe a few incidents like this (this one and the Francisco incident) is what is needed for fans to realize that buying a ticket to a game doesn't buy them the rights to act like a 6 year old and do what they want without consequence.

Security is also an issue. It was pretty lacking in the area near the court.

Indiana's Ron Artest, Jermaine O'Neal and Stephen Jackson and Detroit's Ben Wallace have been suspended indefinitely by the NBA for their roles in Friday's brawl with Pistons fans.

NEW YORK (AP) -- The NBA suspended four players indefinitely Saturday for their roles in one of the worst-ever brawls in the league, a fight with fans that commissioner David Stern called "shocking, repulsive and inexcusable."

Police in Auburn Hills, Mich., were investigating, but did not comment on who might be charged.

I'm not saying the fans didn't deserve what they got at all... read my post... I said that the basketball players were assaulted by every one of the fans that got beaten down first so I don't see how they can justify any kind of money out of it. The fact is, these are PROFESSIONAL athletes being paid millions of dollars. They need to act professional. If anything, I think the teams need to have security that travels with them for crap like this... If I were a million dollar a year player and wanted to beat someones ass, i'd pay some thug to do it for me. I think that anyone that does something like this should be ban from professional sports for good. If you can't be professional you should be playing. I think that the NBA should fine the home team everytime something like this happens.. make it a big huge fine at that... I think that would encourage them to get more security and to be harder on obnoxious fans.

I think that would encourage them to get more security and to be harder on obnoxious fans.I feel the same way. They get paid millions to play a game so they should have some type of professionalism. The fan was not right but going after him was just stupid.

IMO Ben Wallace was the start of all this, yes Artest hard fouled him but it was not a flagrant fowl, although it initially looked like it after seeing the replay a hundred times it was clear that it was not a flagrant. Fouls are part of the fucking game, every player fouls but for Wallace to go after Artest like he did is what set the whole thing in motion. I think Artest is a peice of shit as well and I was extremely surprised to see him lay down on the scorers table and not be in the middle of it. Wallace kept it going up until that point as well by taunting him verbally and throwing his towel at him etc.
Now, on to the player/fan part of the brawl, Artest was completely wrong to charge the stands and top it off with the fact that he went after the wrong guy. Jackson is wrong for clocking the second dude to throw the beer, the punk in the blue shirt and white hat is a bitch for throwing sucker punches on Artest and the Jones was up there trying to break it up when some big black dude started tagging him from behind. The fan that bowed up to Artest on the side line deserved to get tagged, even though he was not in an offensive posture you don't buck up to someone who has already been fighting and not expect to get swung on. The second fan that came in to help his buddy out got the worst of it all, not only did he get hit by Artest but he got it from the big dude in the suit and then when he was trying to get up and off the floor he got sucker punched hardcore by O'neal. Personally I think O'neal is a peice of shit for doing that, and he was supposed to be the poster boy for the NBA. And then there are the fans that continued to throw shit at the players going into the locker room......Assholes!!

All in all it was one of the most disgracing thing I have seen in a sporting event and while it was cool to see at first, I hope to never see anything like that happen again, at least not when it involves fans. I mean we are supposed to be the reason they play!!

I think that would encourage them to get more security and to be harder on obnoxious fans.Agreed. They definitely need to be harder on the fans. If they get obnoxious, give them a warning...if they keep it up...get them out of there. If people start realizing they'll get thrown out of the building/stadium for even fairly minute stuff, I'd be willing they'd tone it down a little.

i dont defend any thug. i dislike artest. i have for a few years now, he's a tool. but i also feel that sports fans have no right assaulting sports players. this shit is getting worse, something like this was bound to happen. i honestly expected it to happen in a baseball game, tho. artest, o'neal... hell, nowitzki and finley... you DO NOT have the right to hit a professional athlete in the head with a full cup of beer! why are you so retarded? why do you twist up what i said? he wasn't playing tuff guy: the fan hit him in the head with a beer. he was already very angry. what a stupid thing to do.

FANS HAVE NO RIGHT TO SAY THE KIND OF THINGS TO PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES THAT THEY SAY. i've heard your basic heckling. thats cool. but like Tiny Tim said, alot of idiots say some STUPID SHIT. i sat by a group of guys at a ranger game who hassled the opponent's third baseman for almost 4 straight innings... after they got drunk of course. lets see some choice phrases... "nigger" "porch monkey" "no-catching jungle bunny" all while throwing pennies at him while he is trying to concentrate, as i saw him get wiffed by a few of the coins... and there is no way in hell that guy couldnt hear them. people around us were getting a little bit unsettled...

Report: Pacers' Artest suspended for 30 games
Posted: Sunday November 21, 2004 2:47PM

NEW YORK (AP) -- The NBA reportedly is handing down 70 games worth of suspensions to the Indiana Pacers for their role in a brawl during the final minute of Friday's 97-82 win at Detroit.

A Detroit television station (WDIV-TV) reported that Pacers forward Ron Artest will be suspended for 30 games while teammates Jermaine O'Neal and Stephen Jackson will sit out 20 games apiece. The station said Pistons center Ben Wallace will serve a five-game suspension.

Artest and Wallace traded shoves with about 46 seconds left in the game. Artest eventually went to the scorer's table, where a fan threw a cup at him. Artest and Jackson charged into the stands, inciting a full-scale riot. O'Neal fought with fans who raced to the court during the melee.

NBA commissioner David Stern called the incident "shocking, repulsive and inexcusable," saying it was a humiliation for everyone associated with the league

Fans were wrong, PERIOD. Security in Detroit should take alot of the blame as well. They were TOO slow and that is absolutely uncalled for. Fans should NEVER be allowed on the court, and the fans that did "venture" onto the hardwood did so several minutes AFTER the melee in the stands. Absolutely unacceptable, by security.
Ron Artest deserved a suspension, I feel it was a bit harsh, but understand why David Stern went that route. Artest is an athlete and a big time superstar in one of the worlds most recognized sports. He's been there before and knows what to expect in a "hostile" environment. No matter what happens, security is there to escort fans that are "threatening" to players. Artest knows this and broke the golden rule of player-fan interaction.

Sure they were. Whether by drunkeness or just plain trash talking, the fight was started. Once it's started, knuckle up and get at it. You talk noise, one day, you will get hit for it.
