I got a PM from Dan a few days ago asking about my friend. He said a few people on here know about it, but if not, he was on his 6R and was merged into. He was in the hospital with serveral broken bones and just got out yesterday. He still looks like shit, but he's gonna live and still has use (if not limited use) of all of his limbs. This got me pretty scared when it happened and I really havent ridden since.

Then Sunday night I get in the wreck in my g/f's car on I35. Half of the replies to my thread were "youre lucky you werent on your bike". Damn dont I know it.

Anyway, ever since my friend wrecked, I've been thinking about switching transportation. Its the worst time in the world to sell a bike, but I know I could do it if I wanted to. I know this is the motorcycle forum, so 99% of the opinions will probably be "Keep the 1". But keep in mind, this is my primary transportation, and I wont be able to afford anything different anytime soon since all I do is wait tables at Chili's. I've been driving my parents pickup lately, but I just want something faster. I have been looking into LS1s, preferably stock ones in M6 to get good gas milage and still be relatively quick.

So what do you guys think? Which one and why?

im actually in the same situation with the bike as my only transportation and so I understand what you mean. It can be kind of scary to think what would happen if you wrecked, but it all comes down to this being the best time of your life to ride a bike. When you are older or have a family of your own with kids are you really going to want to take the same risks you would now? I am living it up while im young and will worry about being logical and practical when it involves more than just myself. Im not sure if this helps you any, but do what makes you happy. If the bike does that for you, dont get scared off of it. Eveybody takes spills from time to time, just be safe when riding and use your gear and hope for the best.

wait how can u afford a m6 or a ls1 working there?!

if u are doubting yourself on the bike..just sell the bike.....it is not ment for everyone...get your 4 wheels and just be happy...

sorry about your friend. i guess it comes down to what u want. I enjoy riding the bike more than driving my mustang. If u really love to ride then keep the bike. I realize this is your only means of transportation so it may be best just to get somethging on 4 wheels with heat/ac and then maybe later buy another bike.

yeah, I was thinking, "damn if i had a better job, i'd get both". But I know (or at least hope) later on in life i'll be making quite a bit more and I'll be able to afford both. I just gotta pick one now

get your priorities in line!
Sell the bike, get a decent car and then get a bike!

To me, a fast car isn't any less dangerous than a fast bike!
I think I have more fun riding my bike than I do driving my Mustang, but i wouldn'y want to have to do either everyday.

Do what makes you feel the safest. There are times when I don't feel like riding the bike so I take the car. Granted, I have an old Oldsmobile but, it's a car and it is safer. You need to have something other than your bike when you may feel particularly wary about riding that day. And also, riding in traffic is just well....dangeous AND boring and uncomfortable on a sportbike. I don't see how anyone can have a serious sportbike as a daily.

But anyway I would recommend that you just get a cheap 4 wheel vehicle. LS1s are nice but, as I grow up I prefer to have small car notes (if none at all) and use my bike for my speed fix. I think you'll just fall into the trap of modding the F-bod and well there's more money down the drain. Just My 2 cents.

Also, I think it's a bit safer to ride a bike when you DO have kids and a family that you love. I think you are a bit less reckless.

Doesnt really make sense. If you look at 70% of the people on this site, they all mod their cars. Whats the difference? The other 30% either have cars that are stock or race and earn money doing it. But the majority of us dont. So we are all putting money down the drain

Personally, I wouldn't depend on a bike for my daily transportation. I have mine more for a weekend toy or occasional thing during the week. If you can't afford a daily driver I'd seriously consider selling the bike. Sorry bro, I know it'll hurt but you can always get another later.

If your bike is your primary and you are nervous about riding then you have a choice. Which is more important your motorcycle and getting around or the risk involved.

I have to admit, after seeing what you saw, Im sure it takes loads of courage and heart to saddle up.

The question comes down to what do you love the most... Do you love to ride, like I do, or are you willing to put it away for safety sake.

The experience that I have far outways the risk. We are only on this earth a short while, and how we spend our time is a choice that we all make.

Good Luck brotha... and Im glad your boy is doing better.

I've learned to listen to that little voice inside, its talking to you for a reason. Get a car, you can always get another bike. In the down time you'll find out if ride or are a rider. It's gets in your blood, riding is the only thing that keeps me from going crazy some days. I got a friend that lost his leg in a bike wreck. Part of getting his artifical leg was to see a skrink. He told her he's taking the insurance money and buying his dream bike. She couldn't believe he was going to ride again. He told her that every women he'd ever been with broke his heart but, he still loved women and he loved to ride.

Elvis- I said "less reckless" Not "never reckless" Wild is in me. I can't shake it.

BottleRocket- What doesn't make sense? I"m just saying, modding a car is a waste of money but, so is any other hobby that doesn't have big returns. It's a waste of cash but, we all love it and do it. I've learned my lesson and I plan to do LESS OF IT. :) I was just tryin to pass some wisdom learned from my mistakes on to anyone who'll listen.

I ride every single day almost. Sometimes in the rain. My bike is my daily driver by choice. I have a Mustang coupe I could drive whenever but nah. That bike is where its at. The feel of the road under youwhile you are in a tight corner. The light weight sensation of the front end while going through the gears. The sound of that inline four turning 15k rpms. If you love it nothing will stop you. I have a 10 second capable stang too but screw it. It's still not even near as fun. Man I say keep the bike and have fun on it.

well i've been riding my bikes daily for the last.. 3-4 months, rain or shine, i've put about 15-20,000 miles on my 2 bikes riding.. (lots of fun rides, 50 mile commute every day, road trips, etc) and i had alot of fun doing it. however, now that its getting cold, i'm not really looking forward to having to rely on a bike for a daily driver. if i have to, i'll do it, but i'm hoping to trade for a cool car i can build up for drag racing. *shrugs* btw, he means a LS1 m6, as in manual 6.. it sounded like you thought he meant a bmw m6. heh.

yeah, but the bike resale market blows then. As I found out with my last bike, the average people accept for bikes is like 5-8k miles per year. If you have a bike as a daily rider, people wont pay jack shit for it if you try to sell it later. My 2 year old bike had 10k miles and everyone said that was way too much. Thats bullshit if you ask me. It was maintained right and never ragged on.

Now with cars, if you have anything less then 15k a year, its great. Even a little over is sometimes acceptable.

I know, i wasnt planning on building a 9 sec LS1 or anything. No 427 superstrokers in it's future. I just wanted to have a nice quick daily Full exhaust, the usual bolt ons, 1LE suspension, brakes, wheels, appearance, etc. No cage, no AC delete, still has a radio, EGR, smog, and everything else that makes it a daily.

Almost all racecars start out as streetcars!!! Until someone outruns you, then, get out your wallet!! If speed is in your blood, be prepared to spend lots of money on your LS1!!!

Good thing my Mustang is still a streetcar!!!! :p :p

Describe or post a pic of your R1 again. I tried to find previous posts where maybe you showed your bike but, couldn't find any.

Thx

Well, i was talking to Adam. I think I came up with a good soloution. Its probably too late in the year to sell this thing anyway. Its up on Cycletrader, and on various message boards. I'll leave it there and see what happens. If nothing, oh well. Ill just ride it for a while until the spring and save all winter long. If I get comfortable again on the 1, ill keep it. But if not, i'll have enough saved to sell it and buy the LS1 I want, not the one I can afford.

Damn. Here is what really sucks. I was thinking really hard last night about this, and this morning I decided I was going to keep the bike and just ride it every once in a while, drive the pickup, and save my money so I could pay off my flight lessons. Because if I got an LS1, I'd have to add a few thousand to it. So it was done, I was gonna keep it. I was going to take it off cycle trader and all of the message boards. Then I got a phone call. A guy in San Antonio wants to pay my asking price...

Call it faith. Hope things work out. You can always buy a "cheaper" used bike.

Keep the bike, you'll regret selling it. I've nearly lost my life twice on a bike and I still can't shake the urge to get back on two wheels. I don't regret having to ride it all year long though, I rodelast bike for about a year and a half, rain or shine, and winter rides can get pretty miserable.

or i could call it fate... whichever. :p

I dont think i could ever own an older bike after having a taste of this tho. :( But i've decided to keep it, so it doesnt matter.

Im gonna get some new wheels to replace the wal-mart ghetto specials on it right now, probably some '99 GT 17'' wheels or something since they fit and the truck will be lower so its easier for me to get the bike in the back if i need to.
