At Razoos. :(
I squeezed the brake while pulling into a parking spot at about 1mph. The wheel was cocked all the way to the right and I squeezed the front brake and lost my balance. I held it until it got too heavy and I just gently let it rest on the ground. hahahaahahaha No damage. No scratching. I cut the motor off and lifted it back up. Oh well. At least I got that out the way.
LOL
sucks you laid it down, but congrats on not messing it up

Dayum man, well you've got that out of the way and now you can get on with your life. I've done it as well, same circumstances. Glad there was no damage. Did it land on the frame slider??? Just wondering how that helped in that particular circumstance. Glad your OK bro.

It happened so slowly that my buddies told me to stop playing around. I was like. "I didn't do that on purpose". hahahaha

Just imagine when you were young. Getting off your new Mongoose and just laying it gently down on it's side. I've never had the bike that far over so it's weight did shock me. It's kinda like when you've bitten off more than you can chew on the bench press. It doesn't just come crashing down. You can control it and let it rest on your chest, then you ask someone you don't know for "help" :)
So it just was at a bad angle and I just let it rest on the frame slider. No damage. Not even a scratch. Just fuel coming out of the spill tube.
At first I didn't think I could get it back up by myself. But I just manhandled it and got it up.

if you don't mind me asking, what exactly did you do to break your back? I'm assuming it was because of the dirt bike.

It was due to inexperience. I was riding for a while, tired, and jumped a hill and the bike came out from under me. I landed on my butt and broke my L-3 anterior (sp?) vertebrae. So I need to sell both of them since it's going to take about 10 weeks to recover. :(

lol.. i've almost dropped the bike at a stop.. the closest was when this AMAZING hot chick was riding on the back, and i was thinking too much about her perfect breasts sticking into my back, and didnt see the gravel on the road, so when i went to stop, i started sliding.. that sent my nuts right up into my throat. wasnt so much worried about dropping the bike as i was worried about embarrassing myself in front of her. :D but luckily i managed to save it and she never noticed.

Same here... :(
I remember doing something like that. I made it look cool though by falling, then spinning on my helmet (breakdance).
It's all about style, even when falling.

everybody falls eventually. it is amazing to see how many are usually the stupid slow speed falls where nothing really gets that messed up. that was how mine went too. but that was a while back.

lol I wouldn't even call that laying it down haha. I know watcha mean though about the weight, I had that sting me once on a 900RR when I was green and learning to respect the weight.
Did you ever take the MSF course? They do the 'locking up the rear break and skid' test, that was a pretty fun part of the course for me, and it really gave me an idea of how to control the bike's weight for some reason when traction was limited. Not saying thats directly similar to your lay down, but you should learn how to skid the rear and maintain control; it'll teach ya a lot about weight and balance.
Plus you can slide the bike after getting good at it :)

There are two kinds of riders, those that have been down and those that will go down......always wear your gear!
<-- down twice, full gear.........nothing but a little soar on my knee. :D

I haven't made time to take the course yet but, when I was learning some skills I went in a big parking lot and practiced locking the rear up. I'm used to it now. It's actually kind of fun when no one is around. :)

wait till you go down doing 60 i was wearing all my gear but it still hurt like fuck, knocked all the air out of me and plus it ruined my 600 dollar arai helmet, owell that was the first time i went down, ive been down once more since then, been down twice now hurts only for a second if your wearing your gear. ;)

just FYI, that's what the helmet is there for, you don't wear it because it looks cool, you wear it because it takes the jolt, instead of your noggin.

Shoot the first street bike I learned how to ride on was my dads 96 cbr1000. That sucker is HEAVY!!! At low speeds its a hand full. Now that I got my zx6 im faster and its freaking light as heck.
Something I have learned when I was riding is: NEVER use your front brake going around a corner. USe it with your rear to slow you down before the corner, then your back brake when going around the corner

try again? using the back brake in a corner faster than 10mph is a nono to me.

no way... using the front brake made my turning a lot harder. I have never had a problem using my back brake over 10mph through a corner. Dont lock it up, just ease into it. Front brake always made me feel like im gonna wreck
ThreeFingerPete

could just be my bike, but my back brake is very VERY easy to lock up, and that's not something i'm looking forward to doing in a corner at any speed, much less 40mph +
what kind of bike do you have?

great advice.. i squeezed the shit out of that front brake one day and it sucked. I wouldnt call what JC did laying it down....LOL when u slide 30-100 feet thats when its called laying her down. JC just dropped his.

The MSF instructors will tell you NO BRAKE in the corner. None. Get your speed right before you corner, you will gain traction as you maintain/accelerate in a corner. You will loose traction if you break in a corner.
ThreeFingerPete
11-06-2004, 07:23 PM
that's not always an option, and it is an acceptable racing technique to brake through the corners, just don't brake too much, and you won't eat it.
ScottJ
11-06-2004, 08:44 PM
thats very true, its not always an option; though I can tell you someone that isn't familiar w/ breaking will highside their bike trying to slow them selves down in a corner. Personally, I can break, if ever so slightly, in turns but its deffintley something that requires experience and finesse; probobly why the msf guys discourage new riders from doing it. :)

It's called trail braking.........In high speed corners I feather the rear brake to regulate speed, lean angle, ect.........it's all about having the throttle and rear brake in sinc......Grabbing the front brake in a high speed corner results in HIGH SIDE........not a fun way to go down from what I've gathered......
Just my two cents

I am normally a "Slow in" and "Fast out" rider. enter the turn slower than I could and accel. thru it.......It takes a GOOD rider to enter at a high speed and maintain it all the way thru a turn..........My buddy Matt (works at MotoLiberty) is one of the best riders I know. He does a lot of cycle racing, and when we go out to the twisties I can't hang with him because he has mastered the Fast in Fast out technique, but at the end of the turn we are going the same speed, I just go into it about 10-15 mph slower than he does......

The MSF instructors will tell you NO BRAKE in the corner. None. Get your speed right before you corner, you will gain traction as you maintain/accelerate in a corner. You will loose traction if you break in a corner.
The reason for this is because you want to use brakes with the most tred on the ground. In a lean you will have less tred to the ground for an easier way to get a lost of traction.
