Anymore it is getting more common to be layed off at least once in your lifetime. Just hopefully it comes at a time when you can afford it.

when he can afford it...? when did people start working when they had nothing better to do? most people work because they can't afford not to. just asking.

He's referring to the fact that he should have some savings to get him by till the next job since he currently has a job. Unfortunately most people live beyond or close to their means and so when this stuff hits, it's always the "worst possible time" and they can't afford it.

He could be refering to the fact that Kerry has already said he's going to raise his Taxes. It could be enough where he can't justify your department.
Me personally I wouldn't take it as a joke, I would start looking for another form of employment. It doesn't hurt to look to be sure he wasn't joking.

Sorry if I offended anyone, that wasnt my objective. I have been layed off before so I know how it feels. I agree that a lot of people live well beyond there means and this henders having a savings account worth much.

unfortunatly i am there now. not necessarly beyond my means, but unemployed, laid off last december, then my father and his boss wanted to to work for them, so i did. Well it got late in the summer season and into fall and about three weeks ago he cut my pay so bad that i couldn't afford to stay there... now i'm beyond my means! GO VOTE! we need J O B S!
