Either one will do. And either one will kill you if you act a fool on it. Personally I like the Yamaha.

i have an r6 with 37k miles on it now. trucks right along. They are all good bikes, try them all out as far as ya can. seating postion and YOUR comfort on the bike should tell you what is right. I for one would MUCH rather have a comfy bike that i like than having a badass bike that i can't ride for more than an hour.

As far as the original question, get whatever you feel comfortable on and go from there.

As I currently own 2 yamaha's, I'd deffinetley suggest one of those too :) I didn't know there was so much yamaha love on this site lol.

I'd get what ever is the best value and most comfortable of those you mentioned above. Honda's are super reliable, Yamaha's too; least mine has been :) Any of the big 4 will do for your purpose, I'd fine tune what you like more after your a bit experienced.

first bike? SV650, YZF600R, FZ6, etc.

Also, the F4i is comparable to the YZF600R. The CBR600RR is the bike that you would compare to the R6 and the Gixxer 6

the FZ6 is a pretty cool bike, but be prepared to pay out the f'n nose for exhaust if you ever want to change it.
