Fedora 2 questions

I've updated my Dell laptop with Fedora Core 2 (2.6.8-1.521.stk16) wondering what CD/DVD burning program should I use, prefer RPM package because I don't know how to install a tar ball. Also looking for MP3 play back.

Here are a couple that should be included with the distro....

xcdroast (kind of complicated)
k3b - easy to use
nautilus cd writer - kind of like windersxp built in cd burner.

i think FC2 has an apt-get or something similar you should be able to install the above apps with it... if not a quick search on the net for any of them should yeild you an rpm to use.

I played with Linspire and it had the K3b and I could not get it to work, thought I didn't try very hard. Linspire also has CNR where you can download lots of apps so you think F2 has it was well? I have to check it out. Thanks for the info.

rpmfind.net can help if you are strictly looking for rpms.

installing your own tar/gz app isnt that bad. most are tar -zxvf *.tgz
cd to the dir
./configure
make
make install

Not all apps are that easy but many are if you don't mind the defaults for install directory and don't need to pass any arguments to it.

I would stay away from linspire and CNR. CNR is a fee based service... but all the software you get can be downloaded on the interweb somewhere for free.

Compiling from source as stang2be mentioned is not that hard after the first couple of times you do it. You can combine installing from source with checkinstall and make your own package if the need arises for an uninstall.

I dont have a DVD burner but for CD's I use cdrecord. If you dont know how to use it just man cdrecord. Pretty simple actually.

Cool I will try it, I need serious help when trying to install a tar/gz package.

the windows update equal for fedora is yum.

Just type in "yum update" and it should go check for new versions of packages you have installed.

Oh that, yes I did that first thing there was a new kernel when I did the update. So I'm using the grubb loader and since I updated the kernel and went to a 16k stk I have 3 options to boot too now. How do I remove the two options I don't use? It's like editing the boot.ini file in Windows.

I can't think of the filename off hand but yes its the same thing. I think there was a gui tool to manage it with too.

I'll double check my box and see if it will refresh my memory. I dual boot my d600 with xp and fc2

Also need a program that will allow me to see wireless networks that are in my area, I used Net Stumbler in Windows but not sure which one to use in Linux.
