It can pick up over 60 satellites, and decodes certain signals. It is echostar compatible(di$hnet), but I don't believe it's direct compatible. The two use different technology. It's like comparing a Mac to a PC, or a GSM phone to a CDMA phone.

I'm new to this brand. Is this like dish network or can this pick up all sat signals?

I guess the base question would be do you have to sign a contract or is this like the old H and HU cards after they got looped?

wtf?

This is Free to Air reciever(FTA), it has nothing to do with Direct TV, It is only Echostar Nagra 1 compliant(Dish network), you do not have to be a current Dish network customer to use this...Dish network makes key changes that do affect these devices, although newer software is normally readily available in a timely fashion...You can also recieve several international satalites with this..

Nagra 1 is scheduled to die around sept 2005, at which time FTA's will be non functionable(unless a Nagra 2 device becomes available-very unlikely)...I would have one already, but im curently a dish subsciber stuck in contract, and cant justify the cost since i rarely watch porn and PPV's anyways, but for someone who does, it's a good deal.....

That's basically right. I think out of the box, it cant decode nagra(it can be programmed).
It is compatible with the echostar(dish) format, but not the directv format. You can use another satellite antenna and use this to pick up other satellites like 82, 91, 121 and more for additional channels or intl channels.

FTA is Free To Air... It will pick up and decode any nonscrambles/non-encrypted C/Ku signal. Just like you tv antenna picks up local stations. ;)
The upgradeability or programming can be left to your imagination.
That's the info I was looking for. So FTA means that it will pick up sat signal without a contract. Sweet.

I'm stuck in contract as well but looking for alternatives.
