This was interesting to me, so I did a quick google search. Found this, plus they have other stuff that might help....

I can't speak for this company, I've never heard of them or used their products.
Good luck,

You thought the standard Alpine, Kenwood, Clarion brands were the best eh? Wrong. Just kidding of course. ;)

Yeah, whatever, at least I tried to help the guy out with a site that sells older looking head units. Can't help it if you don't like my humor, and it was not intended as an insult to you or your vast experience with head units.
It is pretty obvious to me that the original poster is not looking for a high-end system that you are probably accustom to. Maybe you can offer a link or product that has the old school look but with the specs that you'd feel are worthy?

if you want my personal advice would be to leave the stock head unit in place and place a new cd player somewhere else whether it be center console or glovebox. I would fiberglass it in or shoot it with car paint to make it look better depending on what the guy wants....but seeing as how it's an 80's t bird I doubt the guy would want to go through all that. anything else?

well i was thinking scince i dont smoke i can take out the ash tray and put it directly under the head unit.. it looks to fiit right in... and if i wanted i can keep the ashtray door to hide the cd player when im not in my car...
