Class Z will be relieved as I will hopefully be in College Station for the HPDE with NASA......if not, you all are in trouble!
Glad to see more folks with stangs heading out to the BMW events.....We must remind them that mustangs can turn......when properly motivated.
Enjoy.

Ahh yah stock suspension here. :) So we will see how they turn. haha
I've met you at one of the other autox's it was the day after you put on your headers, like to do open track but that will probably wait until I have deeper pockets.

LOL!! I remember that day well.....wrenched till 2 am the night before, left house at 6 am for weatherford. Made it about 5 miles the car dies. Found out my battery cable was resting on the header pipes......rode the wrecker home, fixed the cable and still made it to weatherford for all 8 runs!!! I was lucky that nothing else fried. That was almost a year ago?!!!
Open tracking for HPDE's is not really that expensive unless you get really serious with R compound tires and decide to upgrade brakes. Depending on your tire selection, it might be as cheap as $450 for the weekend depending on the cost of the class entry fee. Do this every other month and it's not that bad. I usually camp out at the track to save costs..... Believe it or not a mustang can be fairly competitive without spending a fortune. Some seat time and a quality combo can net you really good results.

Yah like I said have to wait till I get deeper pockets. 450$ right now can go to mods. :D Car is way too stock.
Me and a freind are building a track only car too so probably end up open tracking it since it will be cheaper to maintain.

So anyone else actually gonna be there?

I'll be there. I was going to make a new thread but since you've already created this one I'll post the info here. http://www.dfwstangs.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Lone Star Chapter of the BMW Car Club of America is putting on it's 7th autocross of the year. As usual it's at Mineral Wells Airport in Mineral Wells Tx. Depending upon the car/gearing this is a 3rd or 4th gear event.
More information here. (http://www.lscbmwcca.org/autocross-schedule.html)
Fee to compete is $25 for pre-registered club members and $35 on site, all other non club members.

Well, with my job status truly sucking I have decided not to risk the car down at the HPDE at TWS and I WILL be attending this event. After this month or the next, the car will be retired from racing duty and returned to stock for sale. Time for a fox body this time with a lower initial entry cost.
See you guys there on Saturday......be ready!!! :D

While I understand about the car and job situation I can't say that I'm overly happy you'll NOT be going to the TWS HPDE. I was wanting to be the fastest stang at least ONCE this year. ;) Oh well. At least we'll have a good turn out, I hope. It seems that my sister and her husband will be there, if they make it, and will be running her Saturn SL2, should be fun to watch a complete newb in a front wheel car run. Her husband doesn't want her to "race" as of yet. He's afraid for her saftey. However, I have a feeling he's more afraid of loosing his ego. LOL!!!! We'll see. Should be an interesting day. I assume you'll be trailering the car out there? Bring a list of "soon to be for sale" items. I'm sure I'll have garage space available. ;)

Cool some Stangs are acutally gonna show up. Hopefully I can get some good help from you guys then. :) Since this is first time out int a RWD car. :D
Also like I said my suspension is very stock let me know what your going to do with your suspension peices. ;)
HAhahaha. There's been at least one mustang at every BMW AX since last year October at least. I know, I've been to 90% of them. As far as suspension is concerned... well you're going to have to figure out what fits your pocket book. You're going to see everything from a VERY well prepp'd MM car, Aggie97, to my Kenny Brown poster child, to your stockish mustang. Matt's car and mine are quite competitive between each other. However, he does have HP/Tq, braking, tires, and frankly that torque arm over me so he's going to win. (I'm not that good of a driver.) However, one or two wrong moves by Matt and he'll have his ass handed to him. ;) Damn tires/TA. You'll enjoy a rear wheel AX, trust me. Also, don't get discouraged when you spin, you WILL spin. We all do. ;) Enjoy the spin. More importantly try to feel what is happening as you're spinning. There is a distinct feeling I get when I spin and I've begun to recognize it just mili seconds before it happens. Just a bit less throttle and NO brake at that point is the difference between lots of smoke and just a bit slower lap time. Tire smoke = slow lap times regardless what the drift boys say.
Come up and introduce yourself during the course walks. Walk the course at least once by yourself.
HAVE FUN!! ;)

Weird stuff happening w/ the board tonight. Talk @ ya'll Saturday. Be there early and let's plan on grouping up in the paddock. Who ever get's there first reserve a few places for the other stangs or at least get far enough away, and yet NOT in the exit path, to allow for the stangs to group up!! :D

So if anybody wants to caravan let me know!

the suspension pieces are staying with me and probably going on the replacement car when it comes time. Like Darren said, money is the key when it comes to making our cars handle, brake and turn. What you have to do is do a bunch of research on what your budget will be, what you plan on doing with the car (street/track or track only) and most importantly, look for combos of parts that WORK. Cheap is not the route to go as those parts break, don't fit or don't work with the "best" combo of parts. Take your time. It took me over a year and a half to get mine together and there was still more to go. I just don't feel like putting that much more money into such a nice car just to go tear it up on a track......
Darren, I will be towing the car out there and I have a proposition for you.....do you still have a stock front sway bar? I will trade you my big boy for your stocker and $75......? Let me know.
Labora
09-20-2004, 08:38 PM
Yah not planning on cheapen out. Should have some thru the floor subframes in the next month. Then probably get a set of good springs, caster camber plates. Some UPR/LWR control arms. Some nice shocks, then some poly mounts. On top of all that thou I really want to get some seat time so I can setup the suspension more so to my liking. :D

Yeah, let's compare apples to apples this weekend. :)
Labora: Hopefully you haven't order the subs just yet. The "through the floor" subs, while the best for the design, aren't necessarily the best for the application. A true race car could use them, anything that's going to be on the street needs to be "re-defined". Seriously. We'll talk this weekend I'm sure. The main idea is to keep an open mind and ask a LOT of questions!! :D :D :D

I didn't order them. I'm getting them used (unused? cus you can't weld them in the remove them haha) for pretty much what you pay for bolt in subframes (really cheap). :) There gonna be a pain to install thou. O well it will be awhile before they get installed so I can always resell them but yah be glad to here from some of you guys who have the good combos working for yah! So we'll talk for sure.

Darren, I honestly think the car and the mods have carried me a long ways.....but I think I have gotten MUCH better every time I take the car out. Seat time has been a blessing and the On Track time has helped me be more smooth.
Oh, and as for spins, yes. You will spin atleast once during your first few events. I finally spun the car last year and behold, Darren got it on video! What is even more interesting is that when I first got into this, I was downloading videos that guys posted on the net. I recently went back and got a bunch of them off my computer to backup and watched them ALL. Darren, I think I found one of your car! Amazing how small the world is...
See you guys there and I honestly can't wait to get my hit from the pipe!!! I need it bad.

Just how bad you think I'll be spinning haha? Hopefully I don't spin on the first lap at least. Gonna try and pace myself getting into how hard I push the car but its tempting to just push it harder then you should on your first time out.
*insert random noob to autox story*
First time we went and my friend raced his Camaro I told him "don't spin out" He said Oh I got new tires "I won't spin" I said well now your gonna spin first lap he shrugged it off. Sure enough first sweeper he hit (2nd turn that day haha) he did a complete 360. :D
I'm gonna have Nitto DR's on the back. :( There not corded yet and came on these track rims so I gotta use them up first. :D
And yah this weekend can't come soon enough!

I would not sweat it too bad because it is smart to pace yourself out at Mineral Wells. The surface can be VERY dirty and takes the morning run session to clean off the surface...especially for my tire combo!! Typically, if the TTOD for a course is 100 seconds, I will take my first lap at approx. 108 seconds for example to essentially put the car on the same line as when I walked the course to see how it feels. This helps you get a feel for how the car is going to transition between turns, establish some timing of your turns, braking and acceleration. Then lap 2 is faster, lap 3 is faster and lap 4 is usually full tilt. In the afternoon session, lap 5 is to retest the course at full tilt, lap 6 is to fine tune problem corners, lap 7 is always my best lap and lap 8 is go for broke. I have also found that a few of my best times have been with someone in the car so feel free to ride along with me or Darren......just be sure to wear your depends!!! :D
Oh, and the DR's are not a bad choice at all for AutoX. Just be sure to put plenty of air in them. I see guys use them all the time on Mustangs and Camaro's and they do VERY well. Much better than a typical street tire.

after looking at the SCCA page and seeing that they will be running on the infield road course, I might go to that one as well. I guess I need to try my hand at beating those guys next......I would kind of like to see what they have in that club as far as what kind of cars. I will be sent to the top class anyway so I will probably get stuck with the full on race car group......$25 for 4 runs though seems kind of weak. You need atleast 6 to make it fun and 8 or more is always great. Maybe they have more re-runs than we usually do?
aggie97
09-23-2004, 11:50 AM
Oh, and Darren, bring your video camera!!! We can do inside/outside videos of our cars if you want. The Z run group is getting big enough now we can do pretty good by going first and last......

Camera is out of commission for now. It was either camera or autocross this weekend. We all know what will win that arguement. :D
As far as spinning is concerned... I have a somewhat different attitude towards spinning. I say sping as soon as you possibly can, especially on a relatively safe autocross course. For one it is fun as hell and a crowd pleaser. Second it will show you where your traction limit is. The remainder of the run, because it's trashed now, should be used to explore that limit and really get a good feel of where it is. I realize most don't think this way but to each his/her own.

What year car is it? There are a couple of used trannies on here for pretty good prices and it wouldn't take long to change it out....
Besides, you really only need 1-2 gear most of the time anyway.....just kick the gear shift out of 4th and use what you got left!!!! It will teach you how to run with broken equipment and save the car to finish a race......don't give up on it yet!!!

I'm to mad to look at it right now haha. Gonna screw with it when I get back from work tonight and see If I can atleast get it out of 4th. As for racing it I dunno I mean the harder I beat on it at this point the more its gonna cost me to rebuilt it. Have to see...

Well, I just finished one of my last prep items for my car and it goes on the trailer here in about 30 minutes.......I am VERY close to just saying fuck it and going to the HPDE. I have an offer coming to me on Monday/Tuesday for work but I am seriously torn right now as to which one to go to.....
I can see two days of Autox MAYBE satisfying the crack habit but 2 full days and 3 hours of track time at TWS is VERY enticing.......I am going to check the weather again in both cities and try to convince the wife she can do without for 3 days!!!
aggie97
09-24-2004, 08:45 PM
Well, I made up my mind to save the $450 and not go to the HPDE....they are predicting rain anyway down in CS and I really didn't want to be driving THAT fast in the rain....
AX here I come.....See you guys there bright and early.....should be there by 7 am and I am bringing a canopy and chairs......You losers better show rain or shine!

Or an underpowered Silver '90 GT :D
I will be in College Station this weekend for a friends B-Day and to watch the NASA races. If the remaining Auto-X dates do not interfere with the Aggie games, I should be able to make it out there.

You really need to get your priorities straight and put that Extra Mustang to good use. YOu know the Aggies are going to probably suck anyway!!!
I really wish I could have been down there this weekend and if I was employed, I would have been in a heartbeat. Now it appears I might have to sell the car unless this offer comes through on Monday or Tuesday.......
I am going to do both AX's this weekend with the BMW group and the one with the SCCA which is a first for me. I am kind of interested to see how long it takes for them to determine which class my car goes into and what my PAX will be.......Their web page only shows 4 runs??? I would think they could do better than that but must be seriously unorganized. Oh well, I can add another race track to the car's log book I guess.

Priorities:
-Aggie Football, Young drunk College girls, Layne’s Chicken Fingers
or
-Eight exciting Auto-X runs, standing at corner station shagging cones drooling over the cornering and braking ability of German made cars, Planning the next mod to catch your competitors
This is definitely a toss up, but the money is already spent on the Aggie tickets.
What is this about unemployment? Selling car? Hopefully things will work out for you this coming week.

Ok, you might have me there and if you throw in a Freebirds burrito, even though I could get one here, CS gets the nod for the weekend.
Honestly, I cannot believe Layne's is still in business. Food is great but the health department must be taking bribes!!! Hope you make it back!
Oh, if you see Adam while you are down there, tell him I hated to miss the weekend but without a job, I just can't spend the money or risk the car.....
Thanks,
