Did Kerry use his influence as a senator to finally get a honorable discharge 29 years later?

John Kerry was discharged from TOTAL ACTIVE DUTY of only 3 years and 18 days on 3 Jan. 1970, he was then required to attend 48 drills per year, and not more than 17 days active duty for training. Kerry was also subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Additionally, Kerry, as a commissioned officer, was prohibited from making adverse statements against his chain of command or statements against his country, especially during time of war. It is also interesting to note that Kerry did not obtain an honorable discharge until Mar. 12, 2001 even though his service obligation should have ended July 1, 1972

Three Classifications

1. Honorable
2. Dishonorable
3. Other than Honorable (Probably what Kerry had before 91 - You can appeal this classification and get it changed to Honorable)

Actually, off the top of my head:

1. Honorable
2. General Under honorable conditions
3. Other than Honorable
4. Bad Conduct Discharge
5. Dishonorable

4 and 5 have to be "Awarded" via a court martial.

He most likely was a general discharge.....

The U.S. Navy released documents Wednesday contradicting claims by Democratic Presidential candidate John Kerry that all of his available military records have been released.

A Bad Conduct Discharge does not require a court martial. It can be rendered after non judicial punishment.

Also, you can apply to have a bad conduct discharge upped to a General Discharge after 6 months. 6 months after that, you can have it upped to an Honorable Discharge.
