View Full Version : The inevitable happened to me yesterday while riding home from Lane's shop

I lost my freaking mind. On southbound Spur408, about a 1/4 mile before the I-20 exit and before 408 turns into Clark Rd.

I saw empty road. I tucked in, rolled on the throttle in 6th gear. Not WOT mind you, but at least 3/4. It took no time to hit 112mph and I got out of it, afterwards I heard an evil muffled laugh, coming from somewhere. I soon realized that it was coming from me.

Oh well..................... :(

I blame it on Jose and Adam. They were riding too fast on our little Sunday afternoon ride. With them was the first time I saw 80mph. It was also the first time I hung the throttle open past 7k rpm. I wanted to catch up to Jose as we were going over Joe Pool Lake on the bridge. So I hit in 4rd gear and it was cool until the needle swung past 7k then that thing started moving like I've never felt ANYTHING move before! I"m sorry I sound like such a newbie, but dang. I'm addicted.

In two months.......I'm going to Kennedale.

When I started on my CBR600 I was still in car-rpm mode and never let it go past 5500 for at least a couple of weeks.

Then one day for no reason what so ever I hung it out at 9k and thought that I had discovered the equivilent of fire for my soul.

yeah, when i first got the 6, i was in car mode as well. shifting low and cruising at a high gear. i'd find myself running around town at 3.5k in 6th. I kept reading on all the sites that happiness begins past 8k RPM, but i didnt believe them, i was having a blast. But as luck would have it, right when i was getting nice and settled in riding around at that speed, along comes this purdy silver T/A w/ stall, duals, slicks, n2o, etc, to ruin all that for me. There was no way i was gonna let him win. and he didnt :D by the top of 3rd, i had buslengths on him. That was the most fun i've ever had. The best part was the feeling when I was tucked in and it started climbing past the 10k mark and i could feel the front wheel start to lighten. not a second later the wheel was up off the ground and i was carrying a balls-out low wheelie until banging second. what a rush...

Yea, it doesn't even get fun until 9K...

Heck yeah those first couple gears are exciting. Wheel is not on the ground very much.

If you have a liter bike it can start at 4k compared to a 600 at 9k. You would not believe the power of a liter bike if you never rode one. On my Gixxer I can feel the front come up in every gear when im smacking them in the red!!!!!!!

Damn X you scared the shit out of me. From your title it sounded like you crashed the bike. Of course after 5 minutes of staring at "the server is too busy messages" I finally read your post. You probably should reword things like that in the future LOL.

Sorry to do you like that Hoss. I wanted to make the title interesting.

I'm starting to get a little too comfortable on this thing, I think. I"m still cautious as heck on side streets and in traffic on the highway. I'm still leery about leaning. Especially on a rural road. Jose took a corner that made me lean over at an angle that I've never been at before. I just held on and did the angle but, all I could think about was "man I hope there's not some invisible dust on this road and I don't low-side" LOL I wish someone had a camera behind me........I bet I looked cool in that lean. :D

LMAO! Sounds like you had fun riding Sunday afternoon with us JC! How did the wind hit you going so fast and did you tuck in really good?

I admit I still ride around in car mode a lot of times keeping the RPM's low but that's mainly just for cruising. When we were rolling around Joe Pool Lake I tended to keep the RPM's up going around some of the curves and such.

JC, get you a clear shield already so you can stay out later! I had a blast following Adam up 67 and 35 after we split up with you. And clean that chain!!!

I had a blast with you guys Sunday. You didn't take me too much outta my comfort zone. At first I was reluctant which is why I was hanging back when we were on Camp Wisdom. But not long after I got comfortable. And decided to get a feel for the bike. The curves were fun and I remembered all that I had been reading about taking curves. I braked, downshifted, press, leaned, rolled and looked. It was fun! Riding to Lane's was my longest ride yet, and the wind was already blowing hard while just cruising on I-30.
Things were going really well and I was having fun when the road opened up and no cars were in sight. I used to always hit at least 120 in the T/A on that stretch of 408 because it's about the only part that doesn't undulate or isn't "wavy". I tucked in hard and opened it up. I still haven't opened the throttle up WOT. The wind wasn't bad at all. I can see how these fools hit 150mph. Just two more seconds and I would've been there myself.

And I got my clear shield during lunch today, so I'm down for longer rides. :D

ALSO: I took off in first really hard on a stretch of back road by my house shifted at 9k and then tried to see how fast I could get it stop. Wanted to work on my highspeed braking. Did pretty good. I thought I was gonna overshoot my turn entrance but then I squeezed the front and that thing slowed down really quickly. I always use both but, like I said. I'm trying to get a feel for how each brake behaves.

Glad you got the clear shield ;) You missed out on a nice highway cruise when I followed Adam close to downtown.

The sensation of speed on a bike is so different than in a car, almost feels like "warp" speed. I wonder how much of a difference that double bubble screen makes on your bike compared to my stocker. It's on a list of things to get on mine when I can afford it. When I'm rolling at 90 I get a lot of wind buffeting and having my helmet suck in a lot with the wind. Of course I can't tuck in as well as you skinny guys to :p

Sunday was a blast for me as well (glad I didn't push you to hard). I was a little concerned when we took off from that one stop sign by the bridge as I looked back and didn't see you or Adam for a bit (guess he waited up for you) and I slowed down to wait up until you guys caught up. Haha... The only other time I lost you two was when we got into Cedar Hill and both of you slowed down LOL :D I'm planning another route for a Saturday or Sunday afternoon cruise, I'll PM you the details so we can work it out. It'll be in the same area but a longer route.

Man I wish I had known you rolled out Monday so I could have gotten some riding in before I left. Can't wait until next time http://www.dfwstangs.net/forums/images/icons/icon14.gif

Becarefull in 1st gear on that R1....going past 9k your front end will lauch straight up in the air with no warning. I like crusing about 80mph then drop to 3rd gear, the beast pulls so hard its like a drug

yeah, i had a real good time, and i got caught up at the stop sign that one time.

jose, thanks again for letting me borrow the jacket, i can't find a leather jacket locally but i'm working on it.

on a different note, i was sitting on the bike while at work today, and BOTH clamp ons are loose, and the bolt is missing out of the right side one. so that could explain a little uneasiness through the turns on my part. scarred up my forks a bit, gonna raise a little hell tomorrow when i go in for my 600mi service.

yeah, i got into mine from a 4k roll in first gear, WOT, to about 11k and boy, that's fun.

LOL That why I punched it. Those guys were leaving me. :D My bike dynoed 136 (so I'm told) so it has the power of the 04 R1s. It's just that the dummy on top needs to know EVERYBIT of how to handle it. :)

I'm just trying to be like John Travolta and "Stay Alive" I think Adam has prior riding experience. "I think"????

True. I was catching up in a straight line, not in the curves so I was cool. :D

Besides, I was just catching up to a lil ol' 600 on the straights. Didn't take much. LOL ;)

04's are dynoing between 153ish up to 160ish bone stock.

Just FYI..

Wouldn't want you to accidently jump on one on some deserted road somewhere!! :)

I'm a member at R1 forum.com and they're getting around 135-140 stock at the wheel. Of course, I think they're lighter than my 01 and they have the ram-air. But anyway. I don't care. A 600 will whip me because I'm timid about WOT.
