hooking up an antenna

This is for my cooler radio. I have a marine cd player in it, and it has an antenna out just like a regular cd player, and i want to hook up a small rubber antenna to the outside of the cooler so i can pick up radio stations and not just listen to cd's.
Can i just hook up regular speaker wire to it or do i need the male adapter into it the anttena out and some kind of wire to the actual antenna.

i have a shorty antenna and a full length antenna wire(not speaker wire). i will let you have it for $5.

or you can check into a metra amplified antenna, 44-UA20, they work pretty well, if you like, i can get you one.
