View Full Version : Building an exchange 2k3 box
What specs can I *get by* with. Will be building this on a budget with mostly surplus parts.
Will run win2k3 server with exchange 2k3. Only going to have 5 or so mailboxes and will also be used as a fileserver.

Just out of curiosity, why dont you just setup a linux box, I will help you out with whatever questions, it would be much cheaper as you wouldnt have to have a bunch of bad ass hardware to do just 5 email accounts, you can intergrate spam filter and virus filtering, and you wouldnt have to worry about keeping it updated as long as you ran the right stuff ( qmail, tinydns, etc... ). Heck, you can even setup webmail.
And file sharing is a snap with samba, and so is setting up backup scripts.
I dunno the few times I've tried installing linux it's been nasty. I'd love to have a linux box though and I think a small server would be a good learning step for me since it's not my main system. What specs can I run linux on?

We have dns servers here that run on 166mhz machines that get about 100,000 requests a day. You dont need much :)
sweet... It will probably be a 500mhz box or an 800mhz box. I'd like to use this to store some file storage on there to. I'll IM you sometime this week to clear up a few other questions I have.

You dont have to intergrate it with the mail system, just as long as you have IMAP running, you can pretty much use any of the webmail programs. My fav is squirellmail.

Exchange is a ram hog. There is just a pop3 and smtp server built into 2k3 server.
