Introduction

Much of the gaming and hardware community has been waiting with bated breath for DOOM 3 from id Software. That time is almost here, but before the game goes for sale on store shelves, id Software has been kind enough to do some things for the community so we can all hit the ground running and be ready for our DOOM3 experience from the moment we open the box.

Today we are sharing with you framerate data that was collected at the id Software offices in Mesquite, Texas. Both ATI and NVIDIA were present for the testing and brought their latest driver sets. While an extensive amount of data was taken, what we want to focus on is the high end video cards that are currently making their way to market. That means we will be showing you frames per second rates taken using the DOOM 3 timedemo "demo1" that will be included in your boxed copy of DOOM 3. The version of the game used to test is the same version you will be loading onto your own computer.

You fucking read their baseline cpu?!?!?

Setup 1:
It utilized a 3.6GHz Pentium 4 processor and 4GB of 533MHz DDR2 Ram on an Intel i925X motherboard.

Setup 2:
This Dell machine featured an Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz processor and 2GB of DDR400 Ram all on an i875 motherboard. Of course since this is an i875 system, all of our cards will use an AGP8X interface.

They used to be in that big black building next to north mesquite. They bought and built that new place I think in '99.

im pretty sure i read somewhere that the human eye cannot see past 40fps so anything above that is a waste. altho it can notice a big drop, like from 60-fps to 40 you could notice

im happy with 30 fps... but for a $500 video card... the x800 is not up to par with the others...

the baseline machine is simply unreal... how much does that machine retail for from dell???!?!?! and another question... the pci-x video cards.. isn't two video cards required for that?? or have I misunderstood something??

It is crazy the way people are trying to get the X800 as well. We finally got another shipment (450) in and have been filling orders from the month of June and the end of May.

The 6800 Ultra is readily available for the same price.

ATI is known for 'fixing' up their drivers to provide faster frame rates. Not sure if that means anything. :p

you should know that in the linux world they are none for breaking their drivers ;)

Yes, Doom 3 will make solitaire faster.

yes it will, check the same site for the performance increase... it also stated your odds of winning are better with Doom3 installed on the same machine. However; minesweeper is now harder with Doom3 installed

*OT*

John is a freaking weirdo. I went in their offices back when quake was released. They went around and renamed all the offices "666" and you had to have a key in the elevator to get up to their floor.

Where is their new office?

Its still in mesquite, its over off 'restaurant row' next to the hooters. You can see hooters from 635.

it's right there?
is that where the main offices are or what?

and TREY
I PCI-X is basically a video card in a PCI-X slot, which offers double the bandwitdh of AGP8x. I think your talking about Nividia's SLI technology...
where you can pair two 6800 GT's or Ultra's and use two vid cards instead of one
I think Alienware is using this now, in there new machines, but I think it's gonna break the bank for anyone..

Yup. If you go download the shareware version of doom, when you exit it, I think it says the location is in Garland which is where they used to be before they got big. We used to go look at their ferraris and lambo's after school.
