i have never watched an anime before but whats the trick? You need to be stoned or drunk to like these things?

I've never seen X, but a friend of mine bought it on someone's recommendation, and says it's one of the best anime series he's seen.

As for watching anime... it's like watching anything (anime is just short for animation ... specifically Japanese animation, instead of Disney or Dreamworks), you don't have to be drunk/stoned (usually). Some of it's ultra cheese, some ultra violent, some ultra sexually explicit, a lot of it's somewhere in between. Anime, basically, is to Japan what Hollywood is to America. Where we have live action movies that cover all aspects of content... Japan has animated movies, and TV series that do the same.

Hellsing (Haven't personally seen, but highly recommended), Berserk (Ditto), Neon Genesis Evangelion, Serial Experiments: Lain, Ruroni Kenshin (OAV's specifically, but the first 2 seasons of the show are decent, although geared towards a younger audience), Cowboy Bebop (Only seen a few episodes), pretty much any of the Macross and/or Robotech, Transformers (of course :D).

I've heard a lot of bad things about the Ninja Scroll series, the movie was good however.

Other movies that are good: Akira (what anime watcher hasn't seen this movie?), Ghost in the Shell (there's a sequel coming out soon), Transformers: The Movie (:D), Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away (as recommended, but I haven't actually seen it yet), Samurai X: Trust, Betrayal, and Reflection (the three OAV's for the Ruroni Kenshin series. Trust and Betrayal take place 10 years before the series, Reflection takes place 10 years after the series. There's also another movie, Samurai X: The Movie, which I think takes place between season 1 and season 2 ... either that or between season 2 and season 3), Perfect Blue, Vampire Hunter D, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Blood: The Last Vampire.

I'm sure there's tons more out there ... this is just either what I've seen or have been recommended to see. Avoid the Evangelion OAV's (Birth, Death, and Ressurection) ... if the series doesn't fuck you up enough, the OAV's definitely will (actually Birth & Death are essentially a recap of the series, with the last 10 minutes being the first 10 minutes of Ressurection ... Ressurection's the one that will make you go "wtf?!").

I've been fairly lucky, in that I've been able to avoid a lot of bad anime ... I've got a couple friends that are really into anime, so they watch pretty much any they can get their hands on ... I just find out from them which are good and which to avoid :)

i've liked berserk the best ... its the typical i dont want to be a hero but im forced to be struggle and in the end he gets beat though they end it with a way inwhich they can make more episodes.... and the Rurouni Kenshin oav's are good..
lol true transformers is the best.. i actually saw spirited away only b/c my g/f thought "it looks cute" turns out it was a pretty good movie.... but i'd recommend watching it with a female it wont have the same affect with a bunch of guys watching it lol other ones i've checked out (on cartoon networks adult swim) is trigun and cowboy bebop.. trigun was pretty good only thing i didn't like is that he didn't go around whoopin ass even though he knew he could... he was trying to be peaceful... cowboy bebop was a good series
