So I installed a system in my Caddy and I'm getting a whine when I put the car into gear. The whine doesn't get louder with the engine speed. It just comes and goes, sometimes it's loud and sometimes it's quite. I've tried several different grounds and no solution. Let me know if you have any ideas, thanks.
could always go to radio shack and try a ground loop isolator for cheap.

I'm gonna have to look into that, I'm new to car stereos and I've never heard of that, thanks.

Pull the RCAs out of the amp while everything is on, this will tell you where the noise is coming from. If the noise goes away, run a new set of RCAs over the carpet from the radio to the amp to see if the patch cables are the problem. If you pull the RCA cables out of the amp and the noise is still there, there is a problem with the amp. Let us know what you find.

Oh yeah, I've already had a pioneer head unit, but I just installed 2 JL Audio 10's and a 800 watt Lanzar Competition amp.
I had a friend come out and I watched him install it. He hooked everything up except for the ground wire to the amp because he had to go so he just twisted the wires together until I could do it. So I drove it like that for two weeks and it was fine. Finally I was able to connect the ground correctly and this happens.
Samhain, I read about that yesterday and will try that today, thanks.

check the rca's 1st, and make sure your ground is good., once i had this problem and it was just that i had a cheap head unit that didnt have a good noise filter or whatever the heck its called? hope this helps.
It could be an RCA thats not plugged in all the way or it could be wire too close to the power or ground wire now. Anything within 6 inches or so can cause radio noise.
It is weird that it only does it with the car in gear, maybe there are some wires ran too close to the trans speed sensors or the harness to the solenoid? It might help to know what kind of car (I got the Cadillac part but which model) and where the wires are grounded to.

It's an old school 1989 Cadillac CoupeDeVille.
I really think it has something to do with the power cable running through an opening where the steering shaft is. Although it's not touching anything, I hear it kind of click on and off when I put the car into reverse or drive.
All the wires are running really close to each other and it's going to be tough trying to keep them apart :( , but when my friend hooked everything up all the wires where balled up and everything was fine.
Thanks guys. I'll try your sugestions.

Thanks for your help guys. Turns out it was a vacuum line that was connected to some type of solenoid on the steering shaft.
