Anyone else have wireless internet?

Just hooked up wireless internet in our house. This shit is cool. I can sit outside by the pool and check out dfwstangs. I also like it because we can take the computer in the garage, and have the internet at our fingertips if we have any questions while working on the car. I recommend it.

That is why we got it. We bought a 60 foot cable and ran it across the entire house to one of the bedrooms, instead of running it through the attic. I just like sitting outside and being able to check out the computer.

Its not too expensive anymore, I have it at home and work. It sure beats having wires ran everywhere....

Make sure you lock down your router to keep your neighbors from "borrowing" your internet connection. I'd also encrypt the traffic as well to keep someone from grabbing your packets as they fly through the air.

I've had wireless for months now, even though I have LAN ports throughout my house. It's great to be able to sit in the back yard, watching the dogs, BBQ'ing and surfing at the same time. :)

my laptop has a wireless card in it....but where i live wireless internet is not very widely used so i cant get "free" internet like yall do up there haha....


but i would like it at my house...would be nice to use the laptop anywhere w/out a damn phonecord in it

i really don't know for sure, but it seems like you could. the main computer or router would be dialed in and online, and you could connect to it, via a wireless modem... my terminology is probably all wrong, though. lol :D

All i know is that when I moved into my house 2 years ago one of the first things I did was run Cat5 cable from the computer room to the living room, and both other bedrooms so I could run my playstation without haveing cable running along the wall and now wireless is so cheap :mad: . I now have ethernet plugs in my wall for no reason.

I think as long as you are not broadcasting your SSID and you turn on your WAP then you will be fine. Anything more than that people are going to get into anyway. I mean if someone comes around with a sniffer and a WAP cracker and other programs they are going to get on your connection.

You can but it's tricky to setup. I've never done it but I know it involves ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) so that it can share whatever connection is available through the network.

I'm running a B card. The G has no real advantage for regular web surfing and can only shine on tranfering files through the network where the higher speed will help. But I haven't had much look being able to see the network to transfer files with my Linksys setup :(

I just picked up a Netgear Router and 802.11b setup which is replacing my Linksys setup. I had problems with my Linksys getting signal on the other side of my house on my laptop (my Netgear USB 802.11b card didn't have a problem in the same room being a little further out) so I switched brands hoping to get better signal strength out of it. I'll post up the results. I like the utilities that come with the Netgear though and is another reason why I'm switching setups.

ICS is pretty straight forward. Performance isnt all that great but it works. I've set it up sharing a dialup connection and a directway satellite connection for friends/family.

Not the ideal method but it can be done.

But can you share out a WAP connection to a laptop doing that? I've never tried but I've been told that's how to do it.

you can do that... a wap is basically the same as a hub. and you can share internet with ICS and a hub :)

You're using XP, aren't you??? There is a bug in XP. search support.microsoft.com and get the article number and call them. They'll send you a fix.

Any idea how to setup ICS with a router? Since ICS requires the host computer to be 192.168.0.1 ... and most routers are hardware defaulted to that (and so far I haven't found an option to change my router's IP address, then again I haven't dug too deep beyond wep and mac filtering)

I'm guessing if I can change the router to another IP, then this wouldn't be a problem, yes?
