Looking at getting a laptop soon with wireless internet.

I've read the comparisons in the mags and on the net, but does anyone have suggestions based on their experience on what are good brands???

or what brands to avoid??

Dell, Compaq, Gateway, Sony, HP, etc.

I have good luck with Compaq and Toshiba. They have both taken good to future operating system upgrades. When tryig to upgrade a dell and a gateway i ran into several problems that did not allow me to perform a operating system upgrade.

hope this helps.

if you want a kick ass laptop and have the cash to spend... IBM Thinkpad T40 series is the way to go.

If you are on a budget I would go with dell latitudes :)

The thinkpads have always held up. I've seen some sales guys beat the crap out of them and they have held up.

I also 2nd the Dell as a good choice.

I say the stoutest latops ever built were the IBM T20 & T21, I dropped one almost 4 feet and the thing kept on tickin :)

Thanks for the advice guys.

I have a buddy that works at IBM, so I may have a hookup there. I passed up a deal he had a year or so ago...could have had a pretty nice laptop for about $800. Will have to see if any deals like that come up again.

I was looking at one of the HP laptops over the weekend...pretty nice with 17" screen + a 10 key pad on the keyboard (I'm an accountant, so that's a nice feature).

Now I'm just trying to decide what's more important....new computer or cams and head work on my car.:p fast computer or fast car.

decisions, decisions.:D

There are many good computers on the market right now...If it was me, I'd buy a Dell. They are very reliable, inexpensive and from what I hear, provide great customer service.

Yea if you could get one of those IBM's with a pretty decent setup for 800 bux i wouldnt pass that up. thats a pretty good deal on those. I just got a Dell Inspiron 8600 and loaded it up with a bunch of nice features and I luv it... As far as I have seen the Dells and IBMs are pretty good but a lot of them will get expensive... if your workin on a budget and still want somthin that is gonna work pretty good for ya Dell would prolly be a good choice... the only downside bout dell is having to deal with the Customer service after midnight cause you cant understand a damn word any of em are sayin cause their english is so broken up. Just my .02 on what i've heard on the laptops.
