I think that I am going for another strip strip combo like I had last time. I don't know that I will do all of that expensive road race suspension again even though that stuff was a blast to drive around on. I like a dual purpose car.
My choices are these:
1) Start with a straight bodied 4 cylinder car, strip it down, paint it the color I want, drop all the goodies in it that I want.
Downside- it will take a while to get back to the track.
Upside - low initial expense.
2) Get into a clean, running 8 cylinder car, build up a motor and tranny for it on the side and have a car to cruise around in.
Upside - get back on the road again soon.
Downside - High initial expense, won't use much of what's in the car anyway.
3) Look around for someone's half completed project, roller with a cage/suspension/fuel lines..
Upside - half the work is already done.
Downside- most rollers are in sad shape if they're cheap, and $$$ if they're sweet, and it will still be awhile before it's on the road...
What do you think?

Trust me, I learned a HARD lesson. No one will ever have such an easy shot ever again.
And..... don't think I haven't been eyeballing that silver Fairmont from Houston. I just don't want to copy Brian ! Unless I get his blessing.... LOL !

#2 seems like the best option. That way you can drive it as you modify it piece by piece like you want it. my .25

I would get into something that someone already started and never finished. You will save alot of money that way even though the initial expense is greater. People get into projects and end up going broke in the process and have to sell it or just get into hard times and need money.
Building one from scratch takes a long time and much more money. I have 3 years and 50k + in mine and we are just now getting it to the track. Although everything was done at 1 time so we don't have to change anything or break anything. But now we are behind on times. When we started high 9's in True street was fast and now people are going 8's.
Start with a project that was already strated and it will take less time and $$$$$$$.
Good Luck

Whatever you do, whether it's a Fairmont or Muastang, get a 1980 or older!!! It's worth it for the cheap and easy inspection stickers. If you get an '80, it won't be exempt until Jan 1 2005, but you probably won't be done with it by then.;)

I like the idea of no emissions, plus a 87-93 bumper is cheap and in order if your gonna paint it!

Chris, I know I am speaking blasphemy here but think 68-69 big block Camaro or an old Mopar.
Mustangs are a dime a dozen, think different. I am with forrest though on the fairmont......just do it!

If the price is right I would go with ARH's set-up or Mike95Cobra has a real nice chassis f/s(Old J&L car). You will save big $$$ in the long run. I would try to find something already painted and mostly complete lacking motor and tranny for around $4-5k.

WHAT? The hands down winner of dime a dozen contest at the track is a 68-69 Big Block Camaro. Go on any night that isn't Test and Tune and throw a rock in any direction, garanteed you'll hit a 68-69 Big Block Camaro. BOOOOORRRRRRING.
Chris, Like most or saying, the absolute cheapest whay to get racing is to buy someone elses incomplete setup. But don't pay more than 50 cents on the dollar. You'll have to search, but they are out their. Hell I sold off my big block car at 36 cents on the dollar. And was glad to get it.

Gotta have a Fox body of some kind. I like going to the Fun Ford events and Buick / Ford shootout and I got a bunch of Mustang buds and we all help each other out so I am sticking with Ford.

I guess I need to go on a race day/night then. I have only seen a couple of them up at denton.
I am trying to convince my dad to have a mid life crisis and this is one of the cars on my/his list. won't be a drag car but a nice resto machine with a taste of modern performance.
chris, is that cage you have Steel or Chromoly? If you end up going with something different, I might know someone interested in it.
this is just me talking but would it not be cool to have a Bad ass corner carving machine that could also go to the drag strip? I know that is what you had but the 5 speed and a turbo would be wicked cool on the road course. Throw some cheater slicks on it and go to the strip when you need the fix. I just think you started with a road race car before and that might be where your heart is.
Keep your head up!!!

Fairmont, CHUMP!!! super cheap for what you get (fox platform) and still pretty original on the street and at the track... keep it looking pretty stock, and it'll get WAY more attention than any mustang you could build... BUT, that attention won't come from police officers or potential thieves!

If I found a half built up Fairmont with some suspension and cage already in it I might be real interested in it. I like the idea of getting into something that is somewhat complete so I am looking for a race prepped roller of some kind.

Chris, ARH's car looked solid from some pics he posted a few months (year) ago. Probabbly not a bad buy if he still has the stock interior and exterior parts to get it back together. Plus, I think he has a DOHC 4.6 and hot side turbo parts for it.
Fairmonts are played out ;)

An 80-82 granada/tbird/cougar would be a cool find.
I might know where to pick up a cheap v8 ltdII, if you were interested in starting from scratch.
