Anyone have any info on this? I think I've been too gung ho... Ran 4 miles and walked uphill at a 8* grade for 2 miles. I did see 1400 calories on the treadmill though but now my inner shins are hurting BAD!

Have you been doing any concrete running?

Get some better shoes and get on a better treadmill :p

I'm using a high end new balance now and this is on a big (not cheap) treadmill at the gym.

Well, if you have access to a track with the soft rubber compound...I would run on that. That was always the easiest on my legs when I used to compete.

I would also take a calcium supplement to make sure your bones stay thick. Anyway, it should pass.

Shins or knees?

Typical *runners knee* is under your knee cap.

My hips are in a shambles. I run on concrete and not very much at that. I weigh about 190lbs on a 5'8" frame and run about 1 to 1.5 miles a day on concrete with some pretty serious inclines.

I will say this. Every once in a while I will cross my shins while watching TV with my legs propped up and there are some tender spots there. I hardly ever feel any pain in my shins anymore when running.

I have moved to a treadmill a few days a week depending on the weather and I have to say that being outside feels like a better workout... especially when I let my pup set the pace. That bitch never gets tired.

ITB syndrome is a little different than typical runner's knee.

Runner's knee is usually associated with the breaking down and wearing away of cartilage underneath the knee cap. The cartilage basically becomes sandpaper and the kneecap can't track properly causing pain.

ITB is associated with the band that runs down your thigh to your lower leg, on the outside of the knee.

Now, a weak or tight ITB can cause runner's knee, because your knee isn't tracking smoothly, eventually wearing out the cartilage under the knee.

A good stretch for the ITB is to stand up, cross one leg behind the other and lean sideways into a wall. This may help with your hip as well, since the ITB runs all the way from the hip to your knee.

With the hips also, most running surfaces (unless you are running trails or grass) will have a camber to it for drainage (some more apparent than others). Thus, one leg will always be a little "shorter" than the other. If you run in a circle, instead of out and back, one leg will always be slightly higher, getting more of an impact.

When I run, I usually run out and back on streets. When I run out, my left leg is to the curb, when I run back my right leg is to the curve.

I've always had problems with my ITB.

This is sore on the inside of my lower knee down to about 4 inches above my ankle.

Sounds like shin splints....

sounds like you've got shin splints

too much running, and not enough recovery time.

I still can't believe you didn't catch the treadmill in the up position until you where done.

Do you need someone to spot you on the treadmill from now on?:D

Leif, not trying to insult your intelligence, but the first time I ran on an incline like that, I got SORE as hell as opposed to it being at 0 grade right on the fronts of my legs where you're talking about. But it was a muscle soreness, not a bone pain.....just clarifying.

no this is bone.

and philip... that was only on like a 4-5* grade on monday... hell I didn't know I was running up hill!?

I think I'm going to just rest up the legs tonight and kill the upper body.

Got back in it last night after a day of rest and I have to say it was really just temporary. My ass will stay off the inclined runs.

I was able to hit 3.3 miles before the bottoms of my feet were sore. (to make matters worse I ripped of my pinky toenail, cuticles, and nail bed two nights ago [same night as the shin splint] and have been walking on my inner foot so it stays sore.

Thanks guys.
