View Full Version : Linux must haves/preferences?
Just got my linux box back up after a couple of years not messing with it. Just wondering what popular opinions are on which programs are absolutely necessary and which funciton better. i.e. Mozilla or Konquerer, etc....

well, after two years i would definitely update/upgrade your o/s. as far as general programs i use:
vi
pkg-get - like apt-get but differnet
openssh
matt's trace route
make
bash
perl
awk
sed
gcc
gtk
glib
zlib
vnc
lynx
netscape - i'm not much of a browser on the unix box but i prefer opera. just procrastinating on installing it as i ssh to my box more than i'm sitting at it.
and...well, damn, there's a lot of other stuff too i haven't even gotten into. if you're using linux most of the stuff that's commonly used and liked will be on the installation cds. what is not can be found, just a matter of preference. if you come up with what you want to "do" then you could probably get more insight to what's available and what people prefer.
freshly installed Suse 9.0, just starting to hunt around for the good stuff!

I always like to load nmap, nessus, sara, and all sort of other little fun scripts but then again I mostly use my linux box for doing pen tests/vulnerability scanning.
