root DNS ?

So I'm looking at moving my companys outsourced web/email internally. One question that I have is what will be the expected downtime for moving the web and email servers to a different ISP(our class C). I know this has to flow through all the root DNS servers to make the IP changes but wasn't sure how long this would take to change from the old IPs to the new IPs. Hours? Days?

Also any go recommends on email server software(You should know my stand on OS by now)? We are currently using iMail which we will probably stay with but never hurts to try something new/better.

When I used to work for an ISP the old standard answer was 24-48 hours. I personally try to time all my DNS cut overs on a Friday as late as possible to allow the weekend for the DNS to propogate out.

Normally, it will take no longer than a day to propogate through the internet.

I've always found it best to do it on Saturdays.

the last time i switched my company's(previous comany) it actually took less than 24 hours. switched it 5:30 in the evening on a thursday, it was good to go at 10am or so the next day. I was quite suprised actually.

The last time I did a move I just setup the new dns record pointing to a test website to give it time to replicate. Then once it replicates move everyting over.

It usually only takes a few hours ( 4 - 6 ), but I've seen it take longer. I'd recommend qmail w/ a mysql backend to be extremly secure and to have a very fast overall mta.

looks like a pita to get setup though, havent talked to anyone that has used it either, but worth looking into.
