Guys I'm having a problem getting FFXI to play on my new Dell Inspiron 8600. The specs are as follows:
===============================

CPU = Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1300MHz
CPU Speed = 1300 MHz
No. of CPUs = 1
OS = Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 Ver 5.01.2600
Version of DirectX = DirectX 9.0
Main Memory = Capacity: 511MB : Free Space: 269MB
Drive [C:\] = Local Disk Free Space: 11.20 GB (Capacity: 37.22 GB )
Graphics Card = NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5650
Type of Chip = Unknown Video Chip
Video Driver = nv4_disp.dll
Version = 6.14.10.4581
VRAM = 128.0MB
AvailableVidMem = 117.6MB
AvailableTextureMem = 172.0MB
Sound Card = SigmaTel Audio
Sound Driver = STAC97.sys

Min Requirements for the game:
PII or faster
128 MB ram
Nvidia GeForce series with 32 MB or ATI Radeon 9000 series
DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card
6 GB free space

I have the game installed and can actually load the game. But within about 5 to 10 seconds of having the game open to play, it will completely close and exit out bringing me back to the desktop.

I've installed the latest vid drivers from Dell and even tried Nvidias website...but their drivers on the site state that they are not supported for mobile vid cards. :confused:

I also thought that maybe since I was playing on a compact keyboard it was conflicting with the configurations with the game. So I plugged in a USB keyboard and I was actually able to play the game for about 5 minutes or so. Then it started to do close the game out automatically again.

Can anyone know what my problem is? Help!

Try cleaning your registry. Uninstall it first, clean it and then reinstall. Cleaning up the registry can fix a number of problems.

Holy crap! The game takes about 3 hours to install!! LOL! :( I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to this stuff. What exactly does the registry do?

Couple of things to try, 1, turn off bump mapping if it's on. Turn off Mip mapping too. To do this make sure POL or FF11 isn't loaded, and go to the FFXI Configuration Tool (Start>Programs>PlayOnline>Final Fantasy XI>Final Fantasy XI Config) ... try messing with different things in there. You're computer should certainly be enough to handle the game.

If that's still not working, I couldn't find any info in an initial search, but the people here (http://ffo.warcry.com/) may have come across this problem, and maybe a solution. They're an official community site, and have a developer forum too, where some of the game developers will answer questions from time to time. Should definitely be able to get an answer there.

Port FFXI to Xbox, and I'd still play it on my computer :p
