View Full Version : The Tamer is hurt...

StangTamer

I drove the Tamer to the track last night and was going to make a few passes. I got there and let it cool down alittle and made a 6.84 @99 with a 1.50 60ft(new best 60ft) n/a with no changes. The second pass I changed the plugs and had some traction issues and only ran a 6.97 @ 99 with a 1.61 60ft. My third pass I heated up the bottles and lined up. I ran a 6.22 @ 111.39 with a 1.42 60ft. (new best). The car got pretty squirly going from first to second causing me to over rev from 2nd to 3rd. The motor came back knocking pretty hard.:( I think I spun a rod bearing. I don't know. I am going to pull the motor in a little bit and see what the damage is. This sucks.:( I am definately going to fix all traction issues before the next time I come out. It is just to hard to pay attention to the tach and the road when the car is getting loose.

Sorry to hear about that Chad, that SUX! Well you know when they are down there is always room to improve:) Just don't keep it down for a year or more:)

I just got back getting a little traction part installed, and so far it is very nice, maybe I can pull the wheels on the bottle now:eek: , maybe...

Thanks guys. John, we are cleaning the garage out right now, getting everything together to pull the motor. Hopefully it is nothing major. As long as I don't have to replace the block it will be back up and running real quick.

sucks to hear that Chad... :(

how high do you think you twisted it? what's your rev limiter set at?

:( sorry to hear that Chad. I got a little scare myself last weekend. Logger showed I revved to 9K (stock bottom end), but a TPS for a brief instant of 94% then it tapered off to 0%(about a .3 sec span)....the TT recorded 9990  but I know I never went that high as I was watching the RPM's the whole time. Seems I ran over something at the track at the top of 3rd gear since I heard this clunk noise from the back of the car. Hopefully you will have yours fixed in no time.

The motor peaks 6500rpm. The closest pill I had for the rev limiter was 7000rpm(I have been meaning to get another pill). It was pretty weird because when I shifted from 2nd to 3rd at 6500 it just started banging and the tach went up to 7000+rpms. The tach jumped up, down and up and then it finally shifted. I am starting to wonder if my rev limiter even worked, because I could have swore that I saw the needle hit 7500rpms.

Sorry to hear that man, but on the bright side, you got a new best, and when you get it back up, you'll be faster than that. That is assuming you address the traction issue.

We have it ready to pull right now. When we drained the oil there is some pretty good size metal shavings on the drain plug. I see some copper in there so it tells me that it is "just" a bearing. To soon to tell if it is any worse. I'll keep you posted.

Time for that new pill. Could have been worse. Hope it gets back on the road soon.

Thanks, it's not much of a best though(I expect it to run much better than that even with the traction issues.). But, I guess it is better than running worse. It just upsets me that I messed it up this soon due to operator error. It is too hard to try and get use to a car that has sloppy traction issues. I knew I should have done alot of things different to keep this from happening. But, coulda, shoulda, woulda. I had the hard way. I blame myself for this one, not the machine shop or anyone who has helped out with working on the car.

Are you talking last night? Did it do it again? My converter bolts loosened up on me I thought that might have been the problem. I will check that out as well.

Well, it was throwing sparks before, so you probably weren't seeing things. It's either my starter or converter causing it. I will have to check it out again.

Seriously though, that sucks that you broke it before i got to see it run. Good luck on a fast rebuild.

Well, it looks like I will have to bore the motor, replace 1 rod, the crank could be turned but I am just going to buy a new one. I will need to buy new rings and pistons now though because I am going to have to bore it, unless I can find another block. Regardless this is probably going to be a $2500.00+ mistake on my behalf. This sucks.

Can you tell what went first?

I won't need to sleeve it, just bore it. It just got scuffed up enough to where I want to bore it. The problem was my pick up came off of my pump and caused a bearing to spin.

Was your pickup not bolted to the bottom of it? I think mine is, as the Canton pan has a different pick up, if not I must have welded it, but it has been to long to remember. That makes more sence now on what happened, to destroy all the bearings so quickly. Hope you can get it fixed soon.

11-23-2003, 11:04 PM
Was that a Stock rod chad? How bad was it twisted? When was the last time you changed the oil before this trip to the track? The oil could have excess fuel in it, and washed out the bearings.

They were Eagle H-beam rods. It was the number 5 rod. It wasn't twisted, the rod bolts were trying to pull out though and it looks like it got real hot since it turned blue. I change the oil everytime out. The cause was the pick up came out of the oil pump and it couldn't pump any oil causing the bearing to go to hell.

man, why don't you sleeve that hole? way cheaper than buying a new set of 8 pistons!!

Because, multiple cylinders are like that. There's no easy way out. Either I find another block or buy new pistons. After it is all said and done pistons look cheaper.

Damn that sucks man! :(

Does Pontiac work the same way as Chevrolet, with a press-fit on the oil pump pickup? Maybe it could use a spot weld to keep it in place next time..

Anyways, that sucks big time, and I hope it doesn't cost ~$2500 like you think it will. :( Let me know if there's anything you need (besides money! ;) ).

How in the heck is it going to cost $2500? New pistons are $600, weigh one of your old ones and you won't even have to rebalance anything. Then get you a block and have it machined and you are in good shape.

46fever
11-24-2003, 03:38 PM
his crank is fucked, he needs one rod and 8 pistons and a block , I think he is just figuring the cost of the machine work and a whole new rotating assembly. He should put an ls1 , hell it would be faster! lol and there pickup tubes bolt on.:D

Rotating assy -> $1820 (KRE)

Block -> Hard to come by, $$$ :( Best blocks were made before 1975 so you're looking for a 30 year or older block

Were the cam bearing journals burned up? -> $300 for a new cam.

Machine work, gaskets, oil pump, etc. More $$$.

and so on.

Tried Ebay? I found a couple 400 engines there? I could check some of the Pontic Yahoo Groups for a block if you need something closer. What motor do you have in there? Good luck Stangtamer. I was hoping to see it running one of these days.

Btw, any of you Pontiac guys have a holley 600 w/electric choke you want to sale. My carb is shot and I need another to get my car running again. ? sure if it's square bore or not so I'd have to pull it in order to tell.
