Bad valve train, bearing, rod, wrench in the oil pan?

Must be bas since he hasn't posted about it, my bet is rod berrings.

I'm putting it back together.

I pulled off the heads and there were small (very small) marks from where two intake valves were tapping two pistons. This made me suspect of the timing chain. So I pulled the front cover and the oil pump and checked out the timing. The dots looked just a tad off and the chain was pretty loose.

So I've put a new chain on and I am in the process of buttoning everything back up.

I'm cleaning the heads up tonight, lots of oil in the intake ports.
I'm putting in new valvesprings and some Comp R lifters. Due to the fact that my lifters and timing chain had 75k+ miles on them and that I have an aggressive cam, and a ton of racing almost everyweekend. I'm gonna say that the culprit is the chain and worn out valvetrain.

Should be running by this weekend.

Did you get a valve job to check those heads? Alot of the bigger cams will kiss the piston on the intake valve.

Nope. It's such a small mark that I'm not worried about it.

Are your heads ported? If they are ported, you need to put some sealant on the intake rocker bolt so it wont leak oil into the intake port.

No they aren't ported. It's just that stupid PCV system that pulls oil into everything.

If you have the time or money, it would probably be a good idea. A good valve job on some high mileage heads can be worth 10-20cfm of flow. I have dynoed 20rwhp differance on a heads cam car that had high mileage heads on it, and got the heads freshed up with new springs and a valve job. Something to think about when you are chasing a hp limited record like yours.

Well, hopefully its not the bearings. That would suck.

A good 3 or 5 angle valve job can be worth some HP for sure!

IAgree, get a valve job done especially if you have 75K on the heads, do it right!!!

What does a valve job usually cost?

http://www.compmachine.com/Heads/default.htm Mill the heads for a bit more compression too

Max Long charges $139 for a three angle valve job. He owns Warehouse Automotive on Irving Blvd.

If I just want some good condition heads I could just buy some low mileage stockers on LS1.com for $250.

That's not bad at all. I already have the heads disassembled.

beter hope you dont have any cracked or bent valves, then you put it back together, and one breaks, and really trashes the motor.

It may be a little cheaper since you already have them disassembled. He does GREAT work, give him a call.... 972-579-1887.

Or give Wells Racing a call, in duncanville. AMS and a few people I know have used them for ls1 engine builds, and they do excellent work at a good price. They are right off 67...by Martin Bros Cycles.

Yup. I know. I had some when the motor locked last year they were all bent up. :D

If the valves touched the pistons, I'd take the heads in and have them looked at. If the valve is bent even a few .001" then you are losing sealing ability. The valve job has to be dead on center.

Okay. I'll take them to that place off US.67

Good choice on taking them to Dennis. He's been around and doing top notch work forever. Also being that much closer to home is a plus as well.

I just got off the phone with Dennis.

$150 labor plus parts. Includes checking the guides, seats and straightness of the valves and resurfacing the valves. :)

I don't think any of the valves are bent but, I'm gonna find some replacements just incase. I don't know if he could get prices like I can on some valves. I'm gonna try to find some known straight used valves from some of the guys on LS1.com and take them to Dennis when I take the heads to him.

We have plenty of stock valves here at the shop...if any of them end up being bent, just let me know.
