how much do you want to spend? you can get some really advanced ones with graphics and backgrounds for several hundred, or you can get a basic one for ~100 dollars...

IMHO.. Alpine, Kenwood, Pioneer would be my only choices..

Alpine :D
Kenwood
Pioneer :(
Kenwood and pioneer decks, specificly the mechanized ones, are prone to breaking and are very fragile. the cheaper kenwoods or pioneers that do not have moving faces arent worth the money.
Alpine, however, are VERY nice decks. if you get anything at all make sure its either an Alpine or an Eclipse. those are also nice decks. they have the most tunability of any deck you'll find and also the most bang for your buck. very badass decks
im getting the Alpine 9811 (about $330) that has a moving faceplate, MP3 compatability, 50w internal, 4v preout, front/rear/sub preouts, and alot more shit. damn good deal if you ask me.

I agree with droptopcobra on everything except his opinion of Pioneer. I have 2 older ,lower end, models of pioneer CD players which have given me nothing but good service for about 8 years for the oldest one, and about 5 on the other. I think you'll find that everyone has an opinion, like the Ford vs. Chevy debate. I personally don't like Sony, but some people think they're great. Good luck with whatever you choose.

yeah the older pioneer decks are much more reliable. they still have good service, but my friend has had 2 faulty faceplates so far (he got the newest one they have the $5xx.xx one). they replaced them under warranty, but c'mon, i'd much rather have one that works all the time. they used to be badass decks, but now theyre more into visual then sound production

I've alsways had Sony, and always have been pleased with them. I guess it's how you take care of it.
Most Sony decks are inferior in sound quality and features to a similar or lesser priced Alpine. Want good sound, sub volume control, etc? Get an Alpine. Want color changing display, and disco lights? get a Sony or any number of other decks. Eclipse is good too but for the most part they are too simple in terms of features/dollar ratio.
Here is another way to look at it: What does Alpine make?
CAR AUDIO, CAR VIDEO, (and weak car alarms). What does Eclipse make? CAR AUDIO and CAR VIDEO.
Sony, Pioneer, Panasonic, etc make everything in the world. Their R&D $ are not focused on making car audio/video gear.

I have always ran Clarion...
Second Choice would be Alpine, dont think I would buy anything else.

hmm... seems like there is a trend going. anyone who likes good sound knows to get alpine or eclipse. the 9811 from alpine has to be the best bang for the buck for mid level systems. and its great for foxes because it has a 3 step tilt face (3 positions or 4 including flat) that makes it much easier to see then just facing foward. Tweeter has it for $329.97. you'll be hard pressed to find a deck that does as much as that one for the money. how much were you wanting to spend?

i think i might head up to best buy and ultimate electronics

ultimate electronics sucks in my opinion as far as selection, and service. Best buy is a much better place if you ask me. I've heard nothing but good things about car toys too though

i like Tweeter personally. i work with the same guy every time i go there and im working on putting a new system in my car. we were looking at alot of differnt subs but he doesnt want to settle on one till he hears my exahust so the bass none of the certain sub doesnt get close to the note of exhaust. great service IMO

I love my Nakamichi CD player. Best sound quality I have heard so far out of a mobile unit.

I have the Pioneer 7400MP, and I love it. You control the frequencies, Low, Mid, High, and the frequency of those signals.
Sub control, reverse sub control, Low Pass Filter, so no X-Over is needed for the interior speakers,
Personally it was the best investment I've ever made, and I've been buying nothing but Pioneer Head units.
This all comes down to personal preference. I paid $250 for it. New.

Update: Alpine announced they will no longer be making security! Yay!

Yay Alpline!
(Yeah, it's a couple years old but it still kicks major ass. :D)
And invest in your speakers. You can have the best deck in the world but if your speakers are crap it's like having a 2000hp car with no wheels.
Tell the truth Chris, is that deck (cva-1000) older than your car?:p
All you really need to know is what kinds of functions do you want in a CD player. ie( Built in EQ, Several sets of preamp outs,
MP-3) Most of the CD electronics in todays CD players are designed and manufactured by Sony.

I've had 2 Alpine decks and had NO problems. I came across a good deal on a Kenwood TV/DVD InDash and I've been pretty happy with it too. I just wish I could figure out how to get it off of Demo mode :(
Go in the menu and turn demo mode off.

I'm pretty happy w/ my alpine. Having said that it'll sure be nice when I'm done w/ the rest of my system to take advantage of this nice headunit.

I LOVE my Alpine... got a CDA-7878 for a steal from Ultimate Electronics right after I quit ;) ... making friends at jobs like that really pays off once you're gone. I think I paid $150+tax for a brand new one :)

The ones that I like are:
Alpine
Rockford Fosgate
Eclipse
I have had all three of them, it really just depends on your style and how much money you want to spend.
