I signed up for the free 1 gig service just to see what it was. Heres what I got back from comcast.
If you reach your 1 gigabyte download limit before the end of the month,
your account will become inactive until your monthly renewal date. You
will be notified by e-mail when you have reached 75% of your 1 gigabyte
monthly download allowance. If you exceed 1 gigabyte during a given
download, the excess amount will be debited from your next month.
Your Giganews Comcast account has a 2 gigabyte per month posting
limit. If you exceed this limit, posting will be disabled for the
remainder of the month. Newsgroups reading will not be affected.

does comcast give you a gigabit newsgroup account? comcast has their own servers with unlimited downloads. 1 gig on newsgroups for a month is not very much.

Not anymore. Comcast's newsgroups are now hosted by giganews. I expect that comcast's contract with giganews is based on the 1gb/month max per customer.
The number, quality & retention of the articles on the groups is much improved over the old comcast servers but the download limit sucks.

i dunno about that. i hit the hell out of comcasts server w/ unlimited downloads. i think there is an option for you to use giganews' servers.
i think that there are two servers.
netnews.comcast.net
netnews.comcast.giganews.net
the first is unlimited downloads but limited retention..

Yup, you're right. My earthlink account's new servers went away/changed as I described and for some reason I was thinking it was the comcast servers that had changed.
