Hey guys,
got an alarm installed by one of my friends who works at Circuit City. He is a certified alarm installer there and didn't think I'd have any problems. Well right after the alarm was installed a funny thing happened. Check engine light came on and when I went to go start the car it cranked over, but wouldn't start up.
Well, I found out that it starts just fine as long as the car has been sitting around for a while (as long as the car is not warm).
I ran one of those little scanners that you buy from autozone through the car, but it wouldn't spit out any codes. So today I take it to my local shop (they've always been good to me, and know what they are doing) to let them scan it with a laptop style scanner. Get a call a few hours later and they tell me that when they plug the scanner in, it gets shutdown by something through my computer. I went up there and they tell me that sometimes alarms do this.
I need help, I'm supposed to leave back to Austin this Sunday and I would like to see if I can get it fixed very soon.
Anyone that knows where I can get some kind of electrical diagnostic done, or someone who has dealt with this kind of problem before, please reply or PM me.
Thanks,
Jerred

Alarm shouldn't have anything to do with the port, but the first mistake is having Circuit City touch your car. If this started right after the alarm install, have your buddy remove the alarm. Then check it again. Call EW at Autosound, that's the best bet.

The guy that did my alarm may work for circuit city, but he was working at 2 other shops before that, so don't diss my friends. Secondly, it had to be the alarm because that is when everything happened, not any coincidence.
As you can notice in my thread, I'm asking for Eric's help anyhow and I'll wait for his answer instead of calling him.

I'm not "dissing" your friend, his work is doing that. I'm not calling out your friend or you, but he has made a mistake somewhere. Is he not able to find where the goof up is? No time to help you?
I've given you the best advice already, unplug the alarm and see how the car reacts. You can do that yourself and it won't cost you anything. For the record I have only known a handful of installers who work for Circuit that are professionals.

As I stated before, this guy has worked for 2 other shops in the past(good shop with people that do good work, that is why I allowed him to do my alarm.
Secondly, no, he does not have the time to help me, in between working 2 jobs, a wife and a 1 year old, he doesn't have any time, + it has een a few months since he did the alarm and I'm sure he wont reemember exactly what went wrong.
Thirdly, I have already tried unplugging the alarm, drove my car around for a week and still didn't notice a change, so there's not really much that I can do. This is why I think there is something wrong with a harness or surrounding electrical stuff. I've tried testing for shorts, fuses, etc...but there is only so much electrical crap on cars that I know about.

I wouldn't mind looking at it for you, shoot me a PM and we can work something out.

Thanks Samhain,
I was going to bring it to a shop (my friend knows the owner), but decided I'm going to get a AFPR to see if that solves my starting and fuel economy problems.
I will try to get in touch with you later if problem is not solved or if I ever need to REALLY scan my car, then I need to get this electrical problem fixed.

Cool, just let me know. I'd be happy to give you a hand.
I do not know the answer. I have not experienced the problem you are describing.
