i've got a joystick with only a serial connection... we have no serial ports open, but plenty of USB, now is there some sort of converter or little piece to stick inbetween or should i get a new joystick?

That sounds like a really old joystick. Most come with a gamepad connection (which is generally found on the back of most soundcards), or a USB connection. If you don't have a connection to fit this, then you'd be better off getting a new one.

I'm not aware of any gameport to USB converters, but there are serial to USB converters. Honestly though, I've never had any luck getting them to work. They're about $20 though, last I looked into them (been a while).
