Just out of curiousity, what is the point of a "through the roof" SPL other than impressing/annoying individuals at a stoplight?? For many us who used to do USAC and IASCA, anything over 130 is just a waste of time and effort...
SP
Of course some of use would also like to be able to recognize the audible difference between KLH and Martin Logans once in our 60's...

Well, lets see. I have been working in the car audio and security for well over 10 years. In my cars the loudest I have run was about 142 dB at an event. I have built and been involved with a handful of cars that were in the 150's.
The numbers these guys are posting are bullshit, plan and simple.
The world record holder right now is running 130,000 watts of power and is in the 170's. Anyone stating they are running over 150dB, let me put my $6,000 RTA and calibrated mic in there car.
You can put the mic the wrong place and get a higher number, but that's like getting a car on a dyno and claiming the rear wheel horsepower numbers are higher than the numbers at the crankshaft.
In the end, your SPL in dB is worthless. I would rather have sound quality any day of the week, rather than a lot of bass.
BTW 164dB in the pics above is like saying my car has 3,000 horsepower

Well I agree with you on that Rue, I like tight bass not loud annoying a** bass. I'm 21 and am into all types of music. Good sound quality and some bass is where its at. Thanks for the clarification though Rue. :)

156 dB OR SPL? Your sound pressure level is measured in dB.
Right now I'm back in the tech field and work for Nortel, I have worked for several shops and on my own. For the Most part, Autosound and security.
Knowing how your system sounds is not knowing what it will hit SLP wise.
What Hertz sine wave were you running when you won the competiton?

That's the oldest line in the book. I built a truck that had 12 15" woofers and never blew out the windshield.

RUE: you think my boat REALLY does 170?
and I have seen windshields pop out.........

07-13-2003, 12:09 AM
Hey, when you have time I would like to get a mic set up in the ride. I would like to compare how much pounding for years on amps and speakers really effect shit. I think its just my ears turning into mush.....but it seems like it used to hit twice as hard.
I started in this industry in 1988 and I've never seen a window break or "pop out". I have heard about it 9812763978171634 times.
Those woofers in the red truck are W3v2's. A far cry from W7's.
We did a cherokee (comparable size vehicle to above red exploder) with 4-12W3v2's ported with 2-500/1's, the complete (floor to ceiling) vehicle dynamatted, 15 farad cap, and all kinds of audio control line drivers and he hit 155.
Like Rue said, only pros spending F loads of money are doing anywhere near 170dB.

HA! It must have been a bad sealing job on the windshield then.
It was josephs electronics old WATTS UPP van. The big red turd!
All autotek, 24 12's on around 10,000 watts......in a 85 van.....
popped the windshield right out. Thats the only one Ive seen pop out. I guess you need yo get out more eric wright!;)

I have been arround car audio for about 10 years as well and you guy are right only the pros like Alma Gates are hitting above 150
I have built quit a few cars Mainly for SQ (Soud Quality) but I did have a Mazda B2000 truck with 4 Kicker Competion 15s in a pac man enclosure inside a snug top with a pass through to the cabin and an Orion 2250 amp... and that combination Shatterd my front windshiled but thats what they make lexan for...LOL

Ive seen two trucks in the 150db range.I dont think you have to be a pro to hit those kinda of #'s.Just time and money.Thats like saying you have to be john force to be able to build a fast car.lol BS anyways to each there own. Some people like the SQ stuff and others DB.I like a lil of both. Thanks for the posts.
Luke
It is not very hard to hit in the 150 dB range with today's electronics, technology, etc. 156+ is a whole other ballgame IMO.

I took all the Mach460 junk out of the wife's Cobra and put JL Audio 10 's, door speakers and decklid speakers w/a Panasonic head unit don't know what db's but the rearview mirror won't stay on the clip on the windshield it jumps it off. And did the same thing to her 2002 Accord.

The woofers in that picture are not W6's.
They are 12W3v2-D2's, 12W3v2-D4's, or 12W3v2-D6's. None of which are referred to as "W6's".
