if i could run 3 miles a day.. i would be golden. but im highly asthamtic.. so running is still out.. plus.. im around 300lbs.. and i dont want to unleash that kinda pounding on my knees... once i get close to 250 i will start trying to run.. till then.. its just a fast walk on the treat mill...its mor psycological.. im losing fat.. but gaining back the muscle i lost over the lastyear.. so my weight is not droppin... i need to kick it up a notch.

During your actual walk, you'll burn the same amount of calories per mile walking as running (just takes you longer).
The benefit of running, in terms of weight loss (not cardio, which running wins hands down), is that your metabolism will stay *up* for a much longer period after the run.
Also, make sure you keep up the water drinking (CL is cool). A gram of fat requires 4 grams of water to metabolize into energy. If it doesn have the water, your body goes to the lean tissue for energy.
I like that the "treat" mill. A freudian slip? lol
Yea, just walk it....you will get to running eventually.
As far as asthma, I got it too, I think if you run your ass off it will help get you past that shit though...every once in a while I get some queesiness in my lungs when i am running....i just reach over and jack up the speed a little and run right through that shit.
I did 3 miles in 25:15 on Friday, I was running at over 7.2 mph for the last mile, did the last 1/4 mile at 7.9mph! Never would have thought I could do that.
I am going to try for 24 minutes flat this week.

I'm about to start on the atkins diet too, but I'm a little worried because my family has a history of heart problems. Got any good sites I can check out, D?

Screw that Atkins crap. Just eat right and eat frequent. I bet you'll stay with it longer.
I'm surprised at you D, I thought you would know this. tsk, tsk, tsk

I'm surprised at you D, I thought you would know this. tsk, tsk, tsk i agree.....restricting yourself so much will lead to overeating later on.....just like trying to skip meals, you just end up hungrier later on. I like trying to eat smaller meals every few hours- like a piece of fruit, tuna etc. That is something I don't feel so restricted by, so it is easier to stick with. I know there is no way I could do the atkins thing- i would end up gorging myself later on and just ruin it. Plus it isn't an way of eating I can live with forever.......i mean, what happens when you go back to eating normal again?

Any diet that allows me to eat Red Hot Pork Rinds, can't be all that bad.
j/k. I've looked at the diet before, but like any other diet, there are too many restrictions for me. I'm still running about 35-40 miles a week, so I don't have to worry too too much about maintaining weight. I've never been much of a "bad food" eater, although I've been known to eat an entire Sara Lee Cheesecake with Strawberry topping in a sitting (~2000 cals). :D
I try to keep my activity up so I'm burning about 3500 calories a day. That way I can stay in a constant full state and not worry about adding pounds. But, for the most part, its all "clean" food: lean meats, fruits, veggies and bread washed down with about a gallon of water a day. I might eat a rib eye or a hamburger or some fatty Mexican food about once every two weeks.
I have a recipe for Sour Cream Chicken Enchiladas that is only about 20% fat, which I make every Sunday and eat through the week. Good stuff and low fat.
I love bread, any kind of bread, wheat bread, bagels, french bread. My fav is a 1/4 loaf of French bread, drizzled with garlic and cheese broiled in the oven.

im not mad.. some people have the genetics to be naturaly lean.. i dont.. so im going to try atkins.. dont hate me when im 235lbs of shreded wheat!!!
:)
I'd like to tone up some. At 6' 200 lbs I'm kind of stocky but have always had "the pooch" since I was a little kid. I can run like crazy and am weight lifting. I'm noticing that my weight is moving around... arms getting bigger stomach getting flatter. But I was thinking about doing the atkins to shave off a good 10-15 lbs. I just have a really hard time adjusting what I eat. I've been a fast food kid all my life and it's hard to break from that. I think by adjusting my portions, I could probably still eat SOME of what I take in now.
I been eating like SHIT after stopping my latest round of the Atkins diet, I haven't gained anything back. I eat a little sugar free ice cream every day, a few potato chips every couple of days. i don't gourge myself on anything bad but I do indulge.
I am still running 12 to 15 miles a week though.
01Whitecobra...jesus 35 to 40 miles...thats insanity!! How fast do you run?
BTW, you need to try to Layered Chicken enchiladas over here at the Four Seasons Restaurant in Las Colinas...pretty damn good!!!
Jewbacca, i think you just need to start working up with the running like I did. I remember a year or so ago when I started I couldn't run for 3 minutes at 5.5 mph!! I'm not exaggerating either...thats how fucking out of shape I was in regards to cardio. The thing you like about Atkins is that you won't lose any strength, its great for someone who wants to stay big and strong.

i started something new last night.. i set the speed to 2.8 mph.. and increaded the gradient to 15*
and then every 15 secones lowered it 1* till i got back to 1*.. then walked fro 5 min.. then did it again.

Depends on the day, but I'd say if you average it all up, its sub 7:00, probably around 6:30/mile.
Sun: 10 miles don't worry about the pace
Mon: 6 miles, don't worry about pace
Tue: 4 miles, 6:15-6:30 pace (slow start, fast finish, negative splits)
Wed: 6 miles, 30 minutes of which is a tempo run, faster than my 10K
Thu: track work, 10x440 in 70 or 20x220 in 30 (run 440 + jog 220, run 220 + jog 110), mile warmup, mile cool down
Fri: 4 miles, 6:30-7:00 pace (slow start, fast finish)
Sat: 6-10 depending on how I feel, , slow as shit.
I ran my last marathon in December. My highest mileage week last year was 82 miles (including a 22 mile run at 7:30/mile). I'll be doing 5Ks and 10Ks from here on out, I got tired of being a skinny little pud. Trying to get back up to 195ish, like I was when I graduated HS. Which opens up a whole new racing category for me, the Clydesdale class (190+ on men, 150+ on women).
I'd like to run a sub 19:00 5K at a bodyweight of 195lbs. Then I'll have the best of both worlds, cardio fitness with strength. Big enough so most people won't fuck with me, but still fast enough to run away from those that do. lol
My oldest daughter (7 now) just finished her first 5K and is looking to do more. So, usually what I'll do is run my routine in the AM and then spend another 20-30 minutes jogging in the evening with her (she is about a 9-10 minute mile) three times a week.

That is cool, I am confident that i can train down to a sub 20 minute 3 mile run eventually and still weigh 200 lbs. I wouldn't mind running some of those races then, it might be kind of cool to get out there as a big boy and run my ass off with the stick people. At least I could run them over if I need to!
That is a TON of mileage though, can't imagine doing that.
I WISH I had a place to do sprints...as I want to increase my all out sporint speed for football next spring. I need to move!!

i give you props for trying it, i know i couldn't do it.
even the walking you are doing is good though. Like you, I am asthmatic too- it is mainly exercise induced- like it acts up when i play soccer etc. So i have had to take it slow on running- i have slowly built up and can't run for long, but i am working on adding 30 seconds-1 min each time i go. It has seemed to work well for me. I hate running, so that makes it harder too. I ride the bike and stuff as well. having bad knees probably makes it harder for you too. just take your time and build up to it. I only run 10 minutes at a time (sometimes twice a day), but i didn't ever think i could even do that. Then i mix in stairmaster or bike.....i have noticed a difference since i added the running, even though it is only 10 minutes a day like 4x a week.
hang in there !!!!! ;)
