I was watching a drag race off of the TIVO this weekend and the track camera showed a couple of pro-stockers pulling off the track. One of the pro-stockers was running wide open and was billowing clouds of smoke. The car continued to run wide open as the track people hastily pushed the other car out of the way. Apparently a piston or something broke in the motor and it was sucking oil up into the intake and was "dieseling" off the oil. I don't know if it finally siezed up or exploded - the camera crew was leaving quickly as well.
Anyone ever heard of something like this? How strange.

never heard of it on a gasser, but they make air inlet block-off valves for turbo diesels so that if the center of the turbo frags out, the motor won't over-rev or run itself dry of oil (by running ON the oil!!)
they're not standard equipment or anything, and it wouldn't take ten seconds to pop the hood and go put your hand over the inlet of the turbo, but if you didn't realize what was happening, it could prove pretty costly!

I don know about puting my hand over the inlet of a turbo. In the early 80s a guy my dad knew was working on a dozer motor nearly 700cid 6 cylinder and was sitting on the air inlet(where the air cleaner goes,a little bigger than a big coffee can) and they started the dozer. It sucked his guts out and killed him before they knew what was going on.....just thought I would share ,not that a car could do that.
I saw the same thing.
Everyone thought that he was spinning his tires due to the smoke, but in reality the engine had grenaded and it was burning oil. There was so much heat in the cylinders that the engine diseling at around 9,000 rpm.
But when you watch the video it certainly looks like he's doing a burnout.
