www.woofersetc.com has the Alpine CDA9807 for $239.99 and the next step up, CDA9813 for $319.99. I have the CDA9815 and I love it. IMHO a good balance between sound quality, build quality, features, and price.
I have previously used Pioneer for decks, but find that the sound quality is not up to my standards these days. I hear the Pioneer Premier brand is better.
As far as the most respected brands in decks, look for Eclipse or Nakamichi. Both are comparatively bland in appearance, but the sound quality and build quality are second to none.

Alpine all the way, go see Eric at Autosound in bedford, he can discount brand new Alpine HUs to you, and i think the base mp3 players are very reasonable. Plus no waiting on shipping :)
and I'm an authorized dealer so you'll have a REAL warranty unlike internet sales.

Here was the situation- my wife being very nice for my birthday bought me a car stereo head unit and new front speakers, she paid full retail for them at the local stereo rape you shop. Where I work we get everything at cost or damm near cost, she must have forgot about that so anyway She got me a cd player and I really wanted mp3 capability, she spent a crap load on me and they will not take the cd player back but they will exchange it. I took it back today and got an Alpine CDA-9811. It seems like a good unit and I have had good luck with alpine in the past I just hate that I paid full retail for the shit. But it was in the best intentions so I LUV YOU HUNNY IF YOU READ THIS AND THANKS FOR THE KILLER B-DAY PRESENT YOU ARE THE BEST.

THIS IS MY FAVORITE NON-TV MP3 player:
One look at the awesome visual power of the CDX-M3DI CD/MP3 receiver, and you'll be smitten! Sony puts a slick, high-resolution TFT screen (just like you'd find in a laptop PC) in your dash, and it's loaded with photographic images for some serious entertainment.
Full Motion mode gives you 13 stunning full-motion clips to while away the time at stoplights — baseball, surfing, flames, and more! In Panorama mode, you get 25 digital image files to use as wallpaper. Add in 7 spectrum analyzer displays and another 23 still images, and you're talking serious visuals. The bold graphics make receiver info easy to see, and the intuitive controls on the front panel are a breeze to operate.
With the CDX-M3DI, beauty isn't just skin-deep. A powerful built-in amplifier (23.2 watts RMS/52 peak x 4 channels) idles within, ready to reproduce your music with accuracy and authority. Adjust the tone contour to match your vehicle's acoustics with Sony's EQ7. Seven preset EQ curves get you in the ballpark, and 7 bands of equalization fine-tune the sound to perfection. If your front speakers are mounted low in your doors, the Dynamic Soundstage Organizer raises your soundstage up to dash level.
This versatile receiver plays your CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs, even discs loaded with MP3 music files. Track and artist info is easy to read on the huge readout, and the high-grade D/A converter ensures that you hear every detail on your discs. For even more variety, you can hook up a video game, portable music player, or VCR to the CDX-M3DI's auxiliary input.
Three sets of 4-volt preamp outputs supply your external amplifiers a strong, clean signal. Built-in high-pass and low-pass filters let you split the frequencies in a subwoofer-equipped system for more clarity and punch. Use the subwoofer level control and low-pass filter to adjust the bass from the driver's seat. A wireless remote is included.
Key Features:
motorized, fold-out face
high-resolution TFT color display
Screen Saver mode lets you play preloaded animations
Panorama/Wallpaper mode displays still image files
Spectrum Analyzer mode
System Display mode gives you highly-detailed setup screens and way-cool operating screens for your various entertainment sources.
plays MP3 files on CD-R and CD-RW, plus CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs

Only problem with the alpine is there is so many ways to adjust the sound that it will take a month of sundays to figure it out. But I love the deck so far and the tilt feature is awsome makes it so much earier to use in the car.
