A little background:
6’3”, 220lbs, 36” waist. Always been a big dude, but never “fit”. I’m actually in good health, good bp, that sort of thing, but ever since I was a kid, I’ve shopped in the “husky” section. A little over a year ago I lost 50 lbs, whittled down from 260 to 210. I’ve since gained 10lbs by being less disceplined, but happier not having to eat 5 or 6 times a day and getting the necessary Mexican food. :) I now work out 2 - 3 times a week by taking kung-fu (3.5 hour classes).

The wife and I are using a trip to Mexico as good inspiration to whip ourselves into shape, and I would consider it a success if I trimmed to 200lbs. (which I haven’t weighed 200 or less since Jr. High  )

I plan on adding some cardio to the mix (stationary bike, jogging) as often as I possibly can, and reign in the carbs. I had good luck with jumpstarting things with ripped fuel before, so I’m considering that again.

Any tips?
Anyone use a reward like a beach trip as incentive to shapen up? If so, did it work?

Walk your ass off then.

You will burn just as many calories walking a mile as you will running a mile, just will take you longer.

Somewhere around 100 calories per mile, give or take, depending on your body makeup and metabolism.

Do it in the morning if you can, burn calories all day long. :-)

Walk 5 miles a day -> 500 calories
Cut out 500 calories from your diet -> 500 calories

800 calories x 7 days = 7000 net calories per week = 2 lbs per week

20 lbs in 10 weeks, like magic!

I've heard that before. Arguably better to walk and save the knees. I've got a date with the wife first thing in the morning tomorrow to go take a brisk tour of the neigborhood.

Oh brother, you have no idea how much I'd like to do that. Unfrortunately, all my money is tied up in kung-fu class. Otherwise, I would definately take you up on that offer.

That's another good way to burn calories.:o ;)

All this talk of exercise and very little mention of diet... Watching your calories, both quality and quantity is a VERY important key to succesfull weight-loss. A perfect example is the fact tha I've done very little cardio since getting back into the gym, my strength is still on the rise and I am mananging to trim about a pound a week without sacrificing strength or muscle, all due to a good diet. Granted, muscle doesn't seem to be your priorty and only a pound a week is a bit slow for where you are wanting to go so add cardio to that good diet and watch the pounds melt away.:)

Great point, I haven't gone into that here.
I'm going high protien, no protien suppliments, but doing my best to avoid carbs and processed foods (wheat bread only). I had very good results with food combination stuff. Not mixing carbs and protien, the idea being that they metabolize at a different rate and use different enzymes to break them down. I'm also doing around 2 EAS carb control shakes per day, and avoiding that damned box of Krispy Kremes someone brought into the office today. ;)

Diet has surely always been the biggest challenge, and its important to me to maintain some sort of realistic approach. I can't live on chicken breast and tuna alone (can't handle tuna at all for that matter).

Thanks alot for your advice guys. Much appreciated.
