Help me save my project. PLEASE!
About 3 years ago, I started to drive my 1989 LX 5.0 from my old apartment to my nice new house. It was about a 60 mile drive, all highway. I made it just over half and noticed that there was a quiet whine coming from the engine. It sounded very similar to the whine of a super charger. Almost a chirp.
I parked it for about an hour and when I went to start it up the sound was significantly louder. As in pigs dying type of loud squealing. Fearing damage, I decided to have it towed the rest of the way to my new home and put it in the garage. "Oh I will get to it later....."
Alright, so now three years later I really want to drive it again and I actually have money to start putting in to it (not a lot, but some). My question is what can be squealing so loud and is my engine shot.
Here is a list of things I know:
-Engine does not seem to be struggling (idle is smooth; still strong)
-sounds like it may be coming from passenger side, but too loud to tell exactly
-does it in gear or in park with no change in pitch with either(auto)
-it matches the revs of the motor and is louder with high RPMs
-removed the belt and it still squeals
I am not sure if it is as serious as a main bearing or as simple as a starter rubbing. I just hope you guys might be able to help me tell before I tear into it or bite the built, cry a little, and just sell it.
